    fiberglass sunroof replacement

I'm wondering if the best way to get my solar panel on the outside of the car is to replace my sunroof glass with a custom fab'd fiberglass roof where I can mount the solar panel without drilling holes in my roof or otherwise damaging my car.

In my mind, I could remove the rubber lining around the glass and make a clay mold. Once the clay dries, I can remove it and use the mold to make the fiberglass roof. Am I on the right track? I'm a major n00b to this fiberglass fabbing thing.

Scratch the clay. I think I"m going to go with a fiberglass mold and a carbon fiber sunroof.

    Here's my initial plan:

Can I use the carbon fiber resin/hardner for the fiberglass as well?

Carbon fiber uses a different kind of resin than fiberglass. I forget the type you need, but it is pricier. Check websites that specifically sell carbon cloth. Maybe shoot an email to be sure. A concern I would have with the CF roof panel is that proper carbon construction requires an autoclave and repairs are a nightmare. Fiberglass cloth, instead of mat, should provide an equivalent result with a much better do-it-yourself attainability.

Ryven, you live just across the bridge from me (Hillsboro, OR). Good to know there are a few more NW peeps in this forum.

From the vids I've watched on youtube, CF doesn't look all that much different from a fabrication perspective than fiberglass. Are you saying an autoclave is required to make the cloth, or to make the component from the cloth?

you should look up what a autoclav does

it's really only for using pre-impregnated carbon fiber cloth, and in a use that will rely on the cf for the structural integrity of the part(like a race car's pure-cf front end that applies hundreds of pounds of downforce to the car at speed).

though i agree, unless weight is a major issue, or you really want the cf look, cf is really not needed for this application.

fiberglass would be a lot cheaper, and still have the structural integrity you need for a panel like that.

I do like the look of CF, but I think I can find black fiberglass and maybe save some money.
