I have done the research and I'll tell you this. The whole computer data bus for both systems are completely different. Not only will the wires not match but the whole wiring harness is different and the color coding is not the same.
In addition you will need to reprogram the car's different BCMs and a whole lot more. It is definitely not worth the amount of work involved.

I'm going to the junk yard tomorrow, but from what I've seen the controllers from later years aren't digital. Look pretty much the same as mine. I didn't check the back of them but you're saying they can't be rewired wire for wire if they're not digital?

Actually the controller look just like mine http://www.ebay.com/itm/330702487102, but this is from 2003. The only thing I don't have is the rear defrost.

There are 3 variations of the controller on the later models the one that looks like yours is actually a carry over from the 02 models.
There are very few of the earlier models that have that.
Look closely at that picture because folks can get them mixed up.

One has automatic climate control whereas the other does not.
You cannot see the back but the plug is different and the systems are built and work differently so even those two are not interchangeable.

For one thing the automatic versions will not under any circumstances turn on the A/C for heat exchange if the outside temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
The manual version will though. What I am saying is that there is more logic built into these individual systems that just trying to match the wires will not work even if you could figure out to match all 31 wires that are found in the back of mine.

Moving on the the digital versions.
I did not mean the A/C was digital but rather that the controller as a digital display for its functions as evidenced by the LCD screens

Those also have a different set of logic that will even need to be programmed into the cars computer.
Another thing is the wires themselves.
I am sure if you were to pop the wire harness plug of the controller , you wiil find that the number of wires that are there is less than the total number we saw on mind.
That means yo will also need a new wiring harness and be able to take your dash apart to run it in the dash like the factory wiring. Thi is just the tip of the iceberg.

The first one is manual only .
Notice the word "Auto" before the off on the fan knob as well as the vent setting on the second pic.

You will also see that the fan speed has only 5 settings on the manual version where there are a lot more on the automatic.
these two are not interchangeable as the systems they run are completely proprietary.
Then you have these.





None of them can be interchanged with the other without major modification to the A/C system in the vehicle.

Sorry GM did not make it easy on this one.

The only change you can make to the first two would be to replace the knobs with thee Caddy version which looks like the knobs on the bottom 2 images but bigger to fit the top 2 images
