    Yet another fiberglass thread

    Hi all,
Ok, after a great deal of research and reading of tutorials (Thanks AJ Quick and all you others out there who put the time and effort into these things) I am ready to begin construction of my sub box for my 02 regular cab ranger. I have a couple of quick questions about fiberglass mat. First I'm currently stationed in ND so local store/availability is limited. So I searched online and found this:
    Fiberglass Mat
You may note it comes in two weights 1 1/2 OZ per sq foot and 3/4 OZ per sg foot.

    Is the heavier stuff stronger?
or Is it that the 3/4 Oz weighs half as much but is just as strong?
The 3/4 Oz is about five times as much as the 1 1/2 for a 50" x 3 yd roll.

Or did I miss something entirely here?

Has anyone used this brand? is it any good? I would like to point out that the local walmart sells a bondo brand? mat for 4$ for 8sq feet. and the local parts store wants almost 6$ for the same package.

    Thanks

ebay is a great source of fiberglass mat cheap. as for the weight I'm ganna go out on a limb and say it's the thickness of it the stuff bondo sells is fairly thick and hard to contour small areas (if your using it on a small mold) thats m .02 and no I dident really answer the question sorry

    Thumbs up

LOL, Thanx for the info maxx, I will have some pretty tight curves to follow so I'll stay away from the bondo mat. I guess in the long run thinner is better since you can always add more layers right?

Their prices are screwy. Looks like it costs less to get a roll 3 times longer. Not gonna order anything from them anytime soon! The weights show how many actual strands there may be in the fiberglass. The 1-1/2oz would be thicker, and stronger.. If you are ordering online, the 1-1/2 oz would be great, as you can do less layers with it than you would the 3/4 oz. The more strands, thicker the mat, the stronger everything would be.

I had no problems with the Bondo brand mat.. but it is a good idea to do a lot of layers when working with the thinner stuff.

This is assuming that you are doing a sub enclosure like you said.. 1 or 2 layers of the thin bondo stuff would be fine for things requiring less strength like a custom dash.

Ok, I started doing some searching on Ebay like maxx suggested and I found this:
    Glass Mat Roll

Thanks for the help AJ I appreciate it. I am planning to build a glass encloser for a pair of 10" Polks (Ex Series) not much I know lol but its enough for me. the problem is the space behind the seats is cramped and a bit odd. So to maximize the air space i plan to build a glass box to fit nice and snug in there. My last question is in an application like this do you think it would work better to have a narrow roll such as the link I posted here or a wider roll such as the 50" ones on the original website I posted from?

Thanks again for all the help

Well you are probably gonna cut the mat up into smaller peices anyways. I used like 2x6" strips, sometimes smaller, sometimes bigger.. Never used a 50" peice or a 12" peice though. Just see how much it is per foot and and which is more cost effective.

If you are that poor, use elmers glue istead of resin. Its not going to hold up anyways.
