I would suggest using a spray can of paint designed for the truck bed (spray on liner). This has the perfect texture you were going for. I use it for all my screen bezels. Not to mention it's tough as nails.

paradox: Well both the factory radio and the factory navigation screen that go in that area are black stock. Unfortunately, if I painted it silver, it would look like silver paint. That silver on the dash is not just painted plastic. It's actually brushed aluminum metal, which has it's ups and downs -- upside is that it looks and feels awesome; downside is that it's impossible to match with paint, and it picks up dirt/grease from your hands really bad on the door handles, but I finally figured out how to clean it -- Wheel cleaner!
BMW used to have a dash finish called "Matte Chrome" that was painted/dyed plastic that was possible to match with paint. A fellow on bimmerforums.com modded an 8" LCD (non carpc) like this and it turned out awesome.. the advantage of matte chrome!

building/configuring & powering a carPC is one thing, taking it to the next step of making it a permanent feature that looks real pretty is quite another. just when i was starting to run aground this thread turns up. thanks for the info, this is invaluable, its given me all sorts of ideas i wouldnt have had otherwise. well done.

gork how did you shaped the foam?I'm trying to do a bigger panel than yours but I have lots of big bubbles of foam.how can I avoid that?tnx
I used a hacksaw, files, and x-acto knives. Pretty much anything that can cut it will.. A serrated knife of any sort (like a steak knife) will work for rough cuts.
People who shape large peces of foam generally use hot knives and grinders. A hot knife is a tool that is basically has a cutting wire that gets really hot when current goes through it. They will cut through foam like it was butter and leave a nice edge... Shouldn't be necessary for this scale project though..
