Can I get some opinions...Thanks in advance

I'm thinking I want to use clay to lay out my design over my screen and my dash. I was thinking I could have the clay directly integrated into the dash seperated from the dash by aluminum foil. The areas that I don't need the clay within this area I'd designate with a noticeable colored tape. Then once the clay is in place spray it with a release agent or cover it in saran wrap. Once the release agent or saran wrap is applied lay down the fiberglass cloth in the areas where the clay is and apply 3-4 layers of resin/fiberglass. Am I wrong in thinking once the the glass cures I'd have a mold that I could lift off of the clay and dash and then remove clay and be able to set that mold back onto the dash perfectly close to perfectly. If this idea isn't flawed I wanted to mold the clay where I could use stock areas where screw holes are to screw the finished product in for support. Once done I could then sand, paint or throw vinyl on it. Please tell me of any flaws in this plan or if it's even complete.

Sounds like it would work. Ive never used fiber glass but will soon. Im thinking the only problem would be the thickness of the fiber glass. Know what i mean? Say if you were going to mold the clay around the screen. Would the screen then fit back? or would the new fiber glass mold be to small for the screen. Id like to hear more about what others think too...

Ok my thinking on the screen. I have a kiosk unit too so people know. This thing is basically attached to the case. Anyways that said the screen itself is something I designate with the colored tape so no fiberglass would go there. But fiberglass would go all around it. So basically whenever I put the carputer in, I'd lay the mold(or finished product) over it or vice versa when I need to take it out, I'd have to take the mold off then pull the carputer out. Thickness is something I worry about with this idea as some areas wouldn't need to be as thick as others and also I'm thinking this stuff isn't going to be like paint and just spread how I want it to.

yeah you will have to use molding clay. Also having the thickness would be hard like you want it would be hard. See if you made the mold from the back side of he clay might work but yet still be a tight fit. Also from the front might set it to far off of your design. Im still having trouble visualizing it and what you mean. I hear they make liquid polymer clay. I do pottery and mostly use earth clays. I dont know much about the shrinkage of polymer clays and how well it would work for what you are doing. Ill read up more about it too.

oh wait cant you do a double mold or whatever
mold it once how you want it, say with paper mechay(sp?) then mold that once again so your final mold would fit. If you wanted to use clay you could use the paper mechay and mold soap with clay.

Can you expand on this. I'm not an art guy, but I know what paper mechay is. Also don't know about mold soap. I think I'm getting an idea of what you're trying to tell me, but if you clarify it a little more it'll help me a lot more.

As I thought about what you've just said about the double mold an idea came to me. Is there a way I could make a mold of both the inside and outside of the clay. Basically making this 'bezel' or dash piece a full 3D piece. If this is possible there would be no worries about which side to use because the entire piece would be glassed. So basically the clay would make up part of the dash because it would apart of the make up. I don't know how good an idea that is though. Also where can I buy clay?

What I mean by the double mold is...
(1)first take a mold of the dash, I'm not sure what is best for this...I figure paper mache would be best for this. Its dries hard and is light and easy to work with.
(2)after the mold dries you make mold from the inside of the mold you just made. Giving you an exact size of and shape of your dash. Pretty much the second mold is your dash. Keep in mind this is the mold you will be using for your fiber glass so i wouldnt use mache i guess. Ive never worked with fiber glass hope to soon...
(3)then ya mold the last one you just made, with your fiber glass, wich gives you the exact size and shape to fit on top of or over your dash.

I just figured that mache would be the cheapest and easiest way to do it but messy. I just got home and its time to go to bed.

(cold heat solder gun is on tv, call in the next ten minuts and well give you this wire stripping tool FREE!!! all yours for only 19.95 + shipping) sorry got off there a bit.

Well any ways after I get up ill look for the best way. If any one else knows please help us.

I wouldnt buy earth clay because it will shrink when it dries and molding clay or polymer clay is expensive, but Id look to get it at your hobby or ceramics store.Im not sure about the liquid polymers yet ill read more tomorrow.

    night
