yeah, curiosity, thats exactly what I was talking about. my numbers were obviously way off, but I expected that.

considering fibers, we all should know that carbon fibers are generally way way smaller than silica fibers. When I did a failure analysis project on a kestral road bike carbon frame, I measured the fibers to be 12 micron in diameter. I was sanding that thing down all day, i didnt care.

if your report is credible, then thats the magic formula for cancerous causing agents in the lungs, from our functional standpoint.

the greater danger, for us, would be something along the lines of a fiber getting in the eye, then foolishly dropping the grinder we were using to sand the glass, right onto our leg or something.

but the dust actually causing more than irritation? I cant imagine any "hobbyist" awho will have those kinds of exposure times!

So what you're saying is, the fibers will only irritate the tissue, but what about in conjunction with the all rest of the hazardous ingredients? Obviously, these particles are going to be smaller and along with a little fiberglass to improve the passage it seems like a winning combination. I still wouldn't tell others to do something simply because I haven't been diagnosed with a terminal illness... yet.

Another option is a gas mask. Sure it sounds odd, but if you're not going to do this over and over and over, check into a local army surplus store. The one in town here has Israli gas masks with a new cartrige fore about $18. You can get more expensive German, and even US masks, but eh... Not to mention, that a gas mask will protect your eyes as well, and I would have to believe that it will work better than any respirator. AND, when the big one comes, you're prepared :P

    a) not comfortable
    b) low visibility
    c) not comfortable
    d) overkill for fiberglassing

just spend $15 for a respirator.

Gas masks are designed to filter out poison gas. Not bondo.

If you're going to go out and buy something for bondo work, use some common sense and buy something designed for working with bondo.Theres a right tool for every job, why the hell would you go out of your way to hunt down a functionaly questionable relic from world war II that isn't designed to do what you are doing?
