Make it above the screen! Making it below would disable people to mount additional deviced behind the screen, if there will be enough place otherwise. Imagine all-in-one solution based on VIA Epia. Double DIN housing with 7.2 LCD faceplate in front, MB on bottom of housing AND slim drive on top with some more space to mount HDDs and other parts in between them.

Now just someone make it happen. I have not enough tooling to do so.

I'm also based in the UK so it would be really handy if you did this.
I'm also amazed liliput or xenarc haven't done this. There are a hell of a lot of cars out there with double din slots. There are also plenty of companies selling these screens for in car entertainment purposes. I'm sure this project could be quite a profitable thing for you.

    that was my original idea.

take a look at this thread

    Lilliput into E36 developement pics.

however, I ended up putting it in the top double DIN.

if you look at the last post on the second page, you can see a lilliput in the E36 dash.

@enforcer: looks like a great install. Any chance of a description of how you did it and maybe some bigger or hi res pics.

Working on a howto, however still in the process of upgrading bits and pieces so it is slow work.

Should have done it as I was doing it but forgot

    Custom Mold

I have a mock up of a plastic mold that I was wondering if you could make for me. It is basically a Xenarc headrest shroud that I bought and moded using cardboard and black masking tape. The pattern is kind of intricate, but I think it could be mass produced. It is basically a modefied bezel that converts the Xenarc into a flip down monitor and puts the Slim/Slot Load Panasonic DVD drive and a graphic fan control display behind the monitor. When I finish I'll post pics and you can tell me what you think... maybe??

    I'm interested

Looks like you've had a lot of feedback. I figured that I would add to it by saying that I would definately be interested. You said that you had an Audi A4 that you were doing the mold for? I have a VW Jetta A4 body style. I think Audi and VW share a lot of styling although I'm not sure how close the interiors are. I'd be interested in a mold for the VW Jetta A4 body style. Keep us informed on the progess as it seems you have a lot of interested people.

I'v noticed that there are several custom radio kits for double din setups on crutchfields website, looks like it would be possible to modify the surrounding plastic to accept a lilli, cool thing is that it would mount up to the OEM mount points.

Yeah, but i just purchased a peice of Plastic sheet 1/8th thinck from cartoys for about ten buck, I'm going to make the trim piece with it, plus it has a texture similar to OEM plastic.

Since most Double Din's are just a bit larger than 7" this may be an alternative to BObdo/fibre/and all that sanding.

Here are some pics of the one I made from the plastic sheet. Sorry about the quality, still not sanded or painted yet.
