need to use clay to bild it. then fiberglass over it
Yeah, I figured that would be the case.Originally Posted by lgbr

I have read many of the posts here, but most I've read describe a "cut-and-fill-in-the-cracks" fabrication -- not a build from scratch process/description.
I also followed the threads posted about using cardboard and coating with fiberglass/foam, but last I read... the process was not up to expectation.
Perhaps it is a large undertaking, but ideally, I will build my own bezel for my truck, replacing the factory bezel/radio/temp controls with a custom-designed display, after market radio, and relocated/update temp controls (see attached image dodge_ram_2.jpg)
How about it?!? Perhaps I missed the thread... is anybody out there currently taking on this task or completed a recent project similar in nature? Any suggestions, links, or information with a post I might have missed with this detail is much appreciated!
Thanks.

So anyone ever get a link to the video? Anyone know of any links to a basic "how to faq" for fiberglassing? I know its a skill aquired over time but there has to be some way to jump into the hobby.
Thanks for the info....Originally Posted by jimmythecow
Jimmythecow,
When you say use clay to build it do you mean...
A. design a clay mold... and pour the fiberglass into a clay mold, when cured, remove from clay mold and discard mold?
B. design clay mold... and cover the entire clay mold with fiberglass, keeping the clay as part of the bezel under the fiberglass.
C. something other than A or B.
Thanks!

@ slangnasty
Why not get another bezel from a bone yard and then mod it?

that's a good idea... and one I have considered, but before I spent the money purchasing a replacement (~$80 used -$160 new) I was curious to see what others, like yourself, might suggest.
Also, I must admit I've strayed away from purchasing another bezel like mine (perhaps i should revisit) because I want to totally redesign the current layout/position of the OEM bezel (I like to think of it as a new artist's "canvas" to work with)
Thanks for the suggestion... any others?!?![]()

I agree! There are lots of people on this forum and other forums performing fiberglass work and mods... we just need to keep searching to find them or encourage them to speakup *bump*.
At least if I could see the video... I might be able to formulate some "MacGyver-type" strategies and tactics I can use... or at least see what NOT to do.![]()
I've performed some basic fiberglass work to my surfboards to repair dings and skag/cuts, but that was mostly patch-up work -- nothing from scratch.
Along this line... I've contemplated visiting a few of the local surf/shape shops here in Carlsbad to see if I can get some fiberglass tips, but wanted to exhaust the possibilties here -- in our forum FIRST, as it seems to make better sense to me to ask ALL of YOU first, before asking a surf board shaper... "how do I use fiberglass to do things other than shape/repair a surfboard"...
it might work...
but... might be a stretch too...

take a pan of clay, smosh your existing one in it, then bake the clay. then use that as a mold to make the fiberglass thing. u can fill in parts and make a reverse mold before you bake it. that would be the easy way. or.... line the whole din w/ tin foil and then fiber over it.... then reverse if u dont wanna work w/ clay.i used foam on my project. but to each there own

These are great ideas. I'd thought of many things, but not quite what you described with the clay mold... which is a great way to approach this task.Originally Posted by jimmythecow
You mentioned you used foam, any pics, suggestions, or more information on this method?
Thanks again for all the info!
