Thread: My Camaro Radio Bezel Fabrication Picture Diary (56k warning)

I'd like to copy your install of yer CarPC exactly, baring any differences in the model years of course. But I have zero clue as to where to start. MD, Touch or view screen. Need all the juicy details. If you havent done so already, I would suggest the screen be recessed a bit so that you can also install a cover. I mean if I were a thief seeing a computer screen on the dash might be tempting.

do you know how hard it would be for a thief to take a screen out of a dash that it's been molded into?

if I were a thief I would look at it and say no way in hell....the time it would take me would get me caught!

but that's just me

Plus, if you install it right, yo won't be able to even really notice a screen in the dash...

that is of course unless you accent the bezzel in some completely different color than the rest of the dash

well thats bull :P i mean a few months ago here in the netherlands they stole the WHOLE interior of a car, seats, everything in clear daylight. (in a carpark)

if the interior of your car was stollen I would hope that your carputer would be the least of your worries....lol

that is pretty funny though....

dang that sucks about someone's entire interior. Luckilly for me I have a car alarm that sends me a page to my LCD remote up to a quarter of a mile away. Truth be told, as much as I didn't believe it at first, I barely ever have a problem communicating the signal from the remote to the car.. I'm in a 5 story building right now at work, directly in the center of the building next to the elevator shafts (seems like metal disrupts signals of cell phones and such..) but I can still start my car from my seat.

I have 35% tint on the sides, so I think if someone passed by they wouldn't notice too much on the LCD, although I do want to make some sort of dummy plate to cover it. Not sure yet, tho.

I am doing the same thing with my face plate.... Did you just solder onto the radio and face plate or did you buy the plugs from kenwood that are on the back of the face plate and on the front of the radio and solder to the plugs and then plug the cable in?

I used two cat-5 ethernet cables to make a long extension cord, and then just soldered them together. My plugs had 16 pins, so two cables works pretty good. Main tip when you do this, if you do solder it like I did, keep in mind how the faceplate's plug lines up to the front of the radio when you plug it in. When I first soldered the wire to the pins of the plug, I was going left to right with the faceplate's plug facing me and then did the same thing to the radio, only to realize when you put the faceplate in it's opposite of how it was when it's facing you. Aside from that it's really not too hard of a job to do -- good luck and post the pictures!

hey, the car is lookin good. i have a 96 camaro and i have a 7.2" wide screen in the dash i just put it in and its just bolted up there. i was looking to do the same thing you did. i was wondering how hard it was to do the whole thing. because i have no experience in fiberglassing at all. let me know! later!

I've never fiberglassed before in my life, so I know how you feel. My biggest tip is to have a dremel, it really helped make the job easier for sanding and grinding away. All in all, it's pretty easy to do..
