Yeah that was my plan until i took the dash apart - the mounting behind is very gay and the aircon controls use cables and are huge. If you look at my 3rd pic above (pug PC) this is what i had planned before i investigated. Looks like I am just gonna have to really hack my dash - oh well! cheers for taking the time to mod my pic though. I really want a slot load DVD below the screen as well. Waiting for someone to take the LinITX screen apart as i hope this will save me some room. I was also tempted to use the 8" sbut i think that will be excessive. Will post pics with the dimensions - it is pretty toight!!!!

hmm why not remove the vents put the LCD there where u want it then where that digital clock is you could put the vents down there just hook a tube into the shaft and block off the top and leave a little hole to cool the LCD while in use

This was u can put your LCD in the dash and have the vents 2

Nice ideea, but I think it would be phisically imosible. The tubes are quite big, and I don't think you have room under the dash to add another tubes... But very ingenious ideea...

I was thinking the same - those ducts are right at the back and huge. Guess i am back to my orginal layout but with some major hacking off the original dash mounting points - oh well!

I would like to recess the screen a bit to help with glare and the face of the dash actually slopes towards the driver which should help with glare. I am itching to get my hands on a screen and start - thats all i am waiting for now but i am waiting for someone to post the 1st internal pics of the linITX one and i am a bit worried about the lack of auto-on but this can easily be solved i suspect. I am thinking that a complete 1 piece centre part will best with some smaller vents moulded in the top.

As for cooling the screen - i live in the UK and i will be tinting the windows a little so heat aint really an issue.

Cheers for the interest and suggestions guys - they are helping even though i don't sound very optimistic. I have a complete centre part coming soon so i can see if i can trim down and relocate that damn heater control. I am determined to make this look stock but be strong as i dont want it getting pinched - I had a cool idea for a fake fascia - make something that looks like a face-off stereo with the face removed to fit into the recessed screen area - ie black plastic with a few clips and connectors on it.

UK_MP3car is also doing a 306 but i think he is planning on putting his screen low down but i think it is best to have your sat nav high and my stereo is crap (no aux inputs) so it will be going.

I'm still deciding what to do! Half wondering whether to lose the vents and HU and wire direct to my amp in the back - was concerned a bit about security but then again I am planning on tinting the windows so it shouldn't be possible to see the tft.

The thing I'm dreading is the actual fabrication itself as I hate doing that sort of thing - can see it being very messy!

you could always ditch the stock idea and chop the dashboard and extend it to fit a 15" screen in, I had the exact same problem with mine and after the tints were fitted you couldn't see a damn thing so I just went mental and put in what I actually wanted, as I remember you are quite close to me, Chorley area? im down the road and can arrange to meet you if you want to bounce a few ideas around
if you can't find time to do it right, when are you gonna find time to do it over.

I just went outside with some cardboard monitor cutouts to see what will fit as i was wondering if a 7" was gonna be too small but the 8" fills the flaming dash! how the hell do you get a 15" screen there???????

I am not living up in chorley now as i am back in bristol doing my PhD (Dad lives up in chorely) but you might be able to help - how did you relocate the heater controls? they are all on cables yeah? and i think i can fit a 7" in below the vents if i can lower the controls by 50mm but i am worried about the cables snagging and not being long enough. The dash on the 306 looks big and easy to put a screen in but because of that currve it is a pain in the ***. I am gonna try and recess the screen a bit at the top to help with the glare issue. I am quite tempted by Cris's idea of removing the vents and placing some on top of the dash - like Lotus Elise ones but i actually think the screen would be too high there and distract me when driving (and i do most of my driving at night)

I've mounted my monitor behind my centre airvents and am making the vents lift up to view the screen, I ran it like this through the summer, and with the centre outlet blocked you get extra air coming out of the side dash vents so air volume isn't a problem..
....Yes, I know it has a stupid name, those crazy Japanese!

Hello buddy, i am quite looking forward to the fabrication it is just planning it is doing my head in cos its my own car and i have an idea of the look i want but its awkward. So you gonna try an use that 6" screen or are you back on the 7" idea? Just won a whole centre dash with buttons and a/c on ebay so will send you some more pics of the back of the controls if you want and I am ordering my screen just after Xmas when the Uni pays me so i can start fabbing up in Jan.

Problem with tinting is that it makes people curious! I am prety anal about parking outside my flat here in Bristol as i live in a very narrow street and oposite there is a couple with a driveway and a nice bimmer so will get up in the morning and move my car if there is a space cos at the end of the day i really dont want some *** scraping down the side of my car. Anyway back to the security - i am gonna try and disguise it but people are gonna see a big bright screen when i pull up but then again there are lots and lots of new cars these days that come with screens but i guess people will know it is an aftermarket one which can be used elsewhere - jsut got to disguise it and also make it obvious to the determined thief that they will trash the screen getting it out. People here in bristol leave their empty glove boxes open to show thieves there is nothing in it - this place really sucks if you have a car. (there is an XK8 with a nice front wing dent next door!)

I got a 15" screen in by getting a second hand dashboard from the scrappies, then cut the thing up and extended the centre section to accomodate, the passenger glove boxes just got lobbed out of the window, I have a nice recess where they used to be and thats where my computer sits now.

Relocated the hazard and fog switches etc... to where the money tray used to be on the right hand side of the steering wheel.

    Ditched the clock altogether

Heater controls...erm....ditched them as well, I just pulled the cable so that it was permanently on hot. I hate our weather and am not comfortable until its a cosy 80deg plus.

The speed of the fans I control with 4 sepearte switches connected to relays which direclty replace the speed control.

Air direction....ditched that as well as it wasn't needed, blocked the top vents (screen), bottom vents (PSU is there) and blocked side vents (tweeters)

All in all I have a very toasty windscreen.

On a more helpful note to your situation, the cables that are connected to the back of the heater controls are the exact same type that you use on a bike, if you go to a good cyclist shop you could probably have them made up to your length, just remember to clamp the outer sheath otherwise the inner cable won't move.

You will see on the back of the heater controls that the outer sheath is already clamped.
if you can't find time to do it right, when are you gonna find time to do it over.
