Is this an elecrical wire, or a manual servo wire ??
hi, i have a new mini, and want to move the heater controls below the switches (see pic).
so that when the headunit is removed, there is enough room to place my screen into the opening.
my problem is that there is a wire which is connected to the knob that changes where the air is blown from, and this wire isnt long enough to reach.
now if i lengthen this wire, (i could get a replacement cable, and use that to lengthen it, and it would be doable, but id probly have to double the lenth)
so im just wondering weather the knob will still function properly, or will the longer wire hamper it?
(the pic is not my car, but same style dash... its the control on the very right im having problems with)
thanks in advance, tom.

Hey there,
Just noticed you're in the next county to me. If it is manually controlled then normal bike brake cable from any cycle shop should work if extended. Hoping to do this with mine on the Pug.
DO you have any details of where the cable goes to? how long it is etc
Is it a bike brake style with sleeve?
As long as the wire doesnt rub on anything. You may want to use PTFE sliders if the cable does touch anything or even little pulleys from a hobby kit. I love those aircraft style toggle switches.
Ditto UK_MP3car - thats what attracted me to this post too!
haha this forum rox. where abouts u all from? im near enuff stoke on trent.
its not the brake cable type, there is one, but thats long enuff, its like a rotational one, kinda like the whole cable rotates, and turns somethin else thats at 90degrees to the knob.
thanks,
tom.
in bristol at the moment. That rotating thingy sounds a bit odd. So you turn the knob, that motion rotates a what is essentially a shaft to rotate summit else! hmm What about one of those dremmel flexible drill shaft thingys - that could possibly be adapted to replace the shaft. Got a nice chuck on the end to grab it too. Just give it a bit of support alng its length and near the chuck. How far do you need to move this thing?

good idea, its essentialy a universal joint... it takes a rotation and moves it 90degrees.
well it is about 6" long at the moment, it almost reaches at the moment, but being stretched like that makes it harder to turn, i could easily make it 12" long buy buyin another and joining the 2, but would this affect its performance?
thanks
tom.
Tom, you got a pic of the thing as i am struggling to think what it is like? I am guessing here but if this thing is pretty thin and twists to a certain degree then doubling its length will make it twist a hell of a lot more. I would suggest lengthening it with much thicker bar/tube.
Sorry for being off topic for a moment, but do you English guys, need to push the gear knob to the left if you want to put it into 1st gear? That has to be uncomfortable...
