Well I got a great quote from the King of Custom (on this board) to install an 8 inch touch screen in my dash but I have been thinking
500+ for the screen 200+ for the install, 70+ for a new dash piece
and I still havn't even gotten around to looking at how to move the ac/vent/heater controls.
I am on the horns of a delimea Sure an indash screen would look better and "Oh So COOL" but it would be so must eaiser to slap in that Digitalww housing and call it good.
Suggestions.
P.S. its for a 2004 Jeep Liberty tiny dash

Option 1 has the most dash space....
But seriously, I personally wouldn't touch the HVAC controls. If your stuck with working with THAT particular vehicle, then the digitalww option you mentioned would be the best.

I was stuck in the same dilemma for a while too, but for different reasons; I eventually decided that I'd design and make my own in-dash housing. That way it'll end up costing me maybe $10 in materials and a few hours of my time, it'll look different from everyone else's set-up, plus I get to learn how to TIG weld aluminum

No doubt about it, in-dash!
Here is another reason to justify the in-dash housing. The in-dash pivots left and right after it slides out allowing you to pivot the screen towards you and reducing glare big time.
I use an in-dash housing in my vehicle but thoughts of having it directly mounted into the dash would be pretty cool. Doing the work myself would not be that difficult for me either but the more reasonable side of my head tells me that I currently have the optimal setup for functionality.

pick up a second facia (from a scrapyard), play around with that.
And investigate wether you can move the AC controls down.
Maybe I am being too thinn skinned but what do you mean by that statment.

I can fab up some mounts and add to all the wires to move the Heater/AC/ Vent controls but its going to take a lot of work.
