wow, interesting stuff....can this be used in pretty much anything or only for molding?

What do you guys have against magnets? LCDs aren't affected by magentic fields the way CRTs are. And they wouldn't have to be that strong. Four small ones, one at each compass point, would hold a plastic cover perfectly in place. Not to mention the clean look since the magnets could be on the inside.

BTW, great work on this writeup. Because of this, I've been able to mold smaller parts - replacement buttons mostly - but plan on doing bigger things. Thanks for sharing your work.

So you can say with certainty that exposing an LCD screen to a magnet in close proximity won't have any adverse effects on it?

I ask because I know a little bit of how CRTs work and why they are affected by a magnetic field disturbance, but I don't know how LCDs work.

At least for me, it's just not wanting to take the risk at all because the LCD screen cost me so much to begin with.

That is correct. Active-matrix LCDs depend on thin film transistors (TFT). Basically, TFTs are tiny switching transistors and capacitors. They are arranged in a matrix on a glass substrate. To address a particular pixel, the proper row is switched on, and then a charge is sent down the correct column. Since all of the other rows that the column intersects are turned off, only the capacitor at the designated pixel receives a charge. The capacitor is able to hold the charge until the next refresh cycle.

You know that a CRT uses magnetic fields to aim the electron beam but LCDs just don't work that way. To even make sure I was right, I placed a magnet on top of an LCD of an old laptop and ran it for two days straight. No problems. As for the magnetic faceplate idea, I was only thinking of small magnets, no bigger than 1/2" in diameter.

btw - old cdrom drives have excellent little magnets in them.... quite strong for their size

Just take a look at the new cell phones. They have both magenets and LCD screens with no problems..

Are you going to use the Polytek 1510 for your final bezel ?
I want to put my epia pc in a hidden compartment in the trunk of my 1'er.
It is a really weird shape and want to pour a custom enclosure in that shape.
Is the polytek stuff strong enough for such a build ?

    Thanks

BTW: How's the bezel going ?
