James, any word on who donated the experimental MKIV center console for this project?

    Check out my carputers:
DVD, GPS, MP3, 6.4" LCD Touchscreen, 5" Headrest LCDs, PSone, DSSC, etc.

And I was under impression that [the] R32 was a kind of car to [not] have too many options. Well, I think the R32 owner here should correct our misconceptions. Eventually.
The radio bucket in an R32 is slightly different from a conventional Golf/Jetta. In the R32, along both sides of the radio, there are aluminum strips that clip into a unique radio bucket. It's my understanding that the 20th Anniversary Edition of the GTI and later versions of the GLI also have this aluminum trim and unique radio bucket. This is not to be confused with the stick-on trim pieces commonly available through the aftermarket that stick on top of the various trim pieces on the dash, console, HVAC vents/controls, and door panels.

The brushed aluminum piece will closely match the R32, 20th AE, and later model GLI aluminum dashes. The teflon-treated aluminum (black) piece will closely match the factory plastic on all other Golfs and Jettas. Even for those who don't currently have the brushed aluminum dash, it's my humble opinion that the brushed aluminum faceplate will match as well as add to the interior appearance of the plastic-dash cars, but it might also attract unwanted attention...

I appreciate everyone's input and aid in finding the most affordable solution!!! Until I have a piece to show you, it will be difficult to understand why conventional plastics aren't going to be strong enough for this faceplate, but I'll try to explain. The back, bottom of the faceplate is mounting to the Mapower enclosure and that area of the faceplate is roughly 4 MM thick - that's 0.157" for those of you who think that way. That is not much material to support the faceplate with, thus the decision to use metal - I don't want these things breaking a few months down the road. After the initial batch is made, I will have some quality pieces to make molds from and carbon fiber may be an option. Nonetheless, I've already made a substantial investment in both time and money and starting over with a different material wouldn't make anybody happy - especially my accountant - considering the delays that would create.

In addition, here's the update I made in the first post:

    STATUS as of 4/28/05:

The initial drawings have been completed and a mock-up was made from fiberboard. The results were less than stellar. I'm providing the new specifications to the machine shop today. I contemplate having to make at least one more mockup from fiberboard once they complete the second set of drawings. News as it develops.

Special thanks to DashPC.com for the loaner MK IV radio bucket that's helping to keep the "per unit" cost down a couple of extra bucks as well as make it simpler to test prototypes and perform measurements. Thanks Chris.

The machinist missed our appointment on Monday. I'm going back on Friday to discuss the new drawings.

    GOT THE BEST NEWS TODAY!!!

A local (yet international) business just placed an order with my machinist to make 30some faceplates for their commercial monitors using THE EXACT SAME MATERIAL I'M USING. Here's why that's good news. The CENTER of their bezel, the part they're paying for only to discard, is of sufficient size to make our faceplate. I can't promise that I'll score the material for FREE, but it will definitely help! AND, while the machine shop is doing those, they're going to drop my design into the machine AT THE SAME TIME so I'll have a true aluminum prototype for practically nothing!

Now for the reality check. I'm getting married in a few days then going on a honeymoon... so I won't have much to add to this discussion for a while. But we ARE getting closer!!!
