With my current faceplate, I get a glare from the seats and center console that can make the screen impossible to see in mid-day sun. (Window tint makes a world of difference!!!) If you have a screen mounted outside your dash, you will also get glare washing out the screen. To address the problem in my install, I'm following the recommendation of one of the posts higher up in the thread and having the faceplate milled in such a fashion that the screen will be angled upwards slightly.

    Hope that helps.

Glad this is coming along. Youve got my order for a brushed aluminum. You know what would be cool tho? if the housing had a little "give" for the screen so it could rotate slightly left and right for driver or passenger viewing

I have bought some replacement parts for various plastic parts from 3 differnet MKIV Jettas that have been broken over the years from the dealer with no problem (air vent grills, drivers side plastic floor trim. The part that your looking for is called a "Center Console Extension" The Bently manual labeled it as a N68-0178, and my dealer says VW's OEM part number for the piece is 1J0863323S_ the last _ there is a blank and its one of 3 different letters for the different colors. They go for around $30-$35 each thru a dealer.

    Hope that helps!

    Progress report:

I'm not happy to report that the machine shop is falling behind schedule - their computer took a dive, supposedly. I am not going to have a prototype Friday, unless a miracle occurs. I will update everyone as soon as I have some GOOD news.

Hi, Just wondering why you aren't making these out of fiberglass or carbon? If you already have one made and your plan would be to reproduce it, it wouldn't be necessary to get a machine shop involved.

I gather from your screen name that you work with carbon fiber...

The point of having the machine shop invloved is that I don't have the time to make them myself. Besides, I need to be sure they're not going to crack if I'm going to be selling them thereby putting my reputation on the line. The acrylic piece I made is fine for me, but for higher volumes and for durability, it really should be metal, IMO, simply because the metal can be thinner and offer greater strength.

you are correct, I run my own composites fabrication business. I could point out many reasons why composites are better than metal but I'm kinda biased . If made correctly with the vacuum infusion process and the right amount of material they wouldn't crack.

    Kevin,

I may have found a source for you in Florida. I have left a message. The guy has EIGHT R32's so hopefully he has some regular MK IV's as well. Heh, heh, heh... my car is no longer 1 of 5000 - it's more like 1 of 4090 and counting down.

This may be a stupid question...so forgive me. I opted for the 1 DIN flip out lilli from digitalww simply because I was able to keep my dash somewhat intact...but I would love to have an OEM in-dash instead. Where is everyone putting their HU's? Or are you completely skipping the HU all together?

    Thanks!
