Thread: Solvent adhesives... why don't more people use them?

Rustoleum makes some Plasti-Kote paint which does a good job of adhering directly to platics without the need for primer - I used it to to turn my yellow Earthmate black.

But I don't think the Plasti-Kote is suitable for the dash, since you'll want a close color-match, as well as texturing and from what I've seen, the Plasti-Kote just comes in basic colors.

Yeah, thats why I thought about the specific plastics primers.
That way, once primered, you could get the local auto place to match a paint swatch to either your interior vinyl/plastics, or a contrast colour based on the exterior paint code, and get a good blend, and have it mixed for rattle can.

if you have a colour match what about grit blasting the finished area to give it texture?

Hmm....I have a 48" R/C boat made out of injected ABS...although its very flexibale...doesnt seem like a good material to construct a dash out of, for appearence. Although Bondo can crack...its quicker and strong enough for everyday use unless your caking it on and going offroading. lol

How thick are you applying it?

Not constructing a dash out of it.. using it as adhesive & filler..

I need to see if I can get my son to take a picture... I have taken my dash panel with monitor bezel glued in place as shown above and twisted it quite hard... no problem whatsoever... I guess to further test it, I could make room in the freezer to let it get good and cold and do it again... of course, just to prove its structural superiority to fiberglassing and bondoing the bezel into place. If I can get him to take a picture, I'll post it. Anyway, I havne't had a chance to do my final sanding... life always gets in the way of hobbies... I hate it! The weekend is almost here though... I can get some stuff done this weekend for sure.

So what does everyone think? Is this going to replace body filler?

Filler comes in a jar. Easy to use and sand. No thinking involved. I say no. I'd rather pour a resin / microsphere mix.

I think it depends on the circumstances..
