more progress pics - bonding bezels together and creating a new dash bezel contour with ABS cement and a masking tape dam/mold

this first one shows my monitor bezel just after sanding, aligning with masking tape, and pouring Oatey's ABS Cement into the voids on the sides.

this image is of a masking tape dam i made as a mold to create a new contour under the top lip of my dash bezel that I sawed away because it protruded down farther than I wanted.

this last one is the back side of the dash bezel showing the ABS cement poured into the masking tape mold to make the new contour

nice..you got the idea from the other thread about the abs cement....hows that working out for you?? can you sand that stuff down??

I will say, though, that when it hardens it feels just like the dash material. I don't think i'll really need to do much sanding really. With the ability to pour it into masking tape I can get nearly the exact shape i want.

yeah but im pretty sure you cant get a perfect, or maybe for you you can..look at the pic i added and tell me what you think i can do...i want the bezel and the plastic from my screen to mesh in together to look like the second pic which i used bondo

oh no - i don't expect to get a perfect, finished surface from a masking tape dam. I'm just saying that I can make the shape very close to the end result so I'll just need to do a small amount of sanding and metal glazing to get it perfect.

what do you think would be a good way for me to do it? and did u add anything into that can of oatey that you bought? or just used it str8 out of the can?

I've used it straight from the can to fuse parts that are close together - just seal the back with masking tape and dribble a little into the crack. I've also added some abs chips to some in a condiment bottle (from walmart) to thicken it and have used that to build up areas where there's a large gap. It takes a good 4-6 hours to fully dissolve the chips though.

Keep in mind that this is my first time ever doing anything like this and I'm learning as i go here. I'm definitely no expert. I just happen to have hit the forums at the right time to take this abs thing and run with it.

One cautionary note: I've noticed that where I apply this abs goop in large amounts that the solvent tends to spread into the bezel pieces and soften them. I've used a lot in that top part of my dash bezel tonight and I'm a little worried that I might find softened and warped bezel in the morning. On the other hand, that softening is a VERY good sign that this stuff is truly becoming one with my plastic parts and the thing truly will be one solid piece of plastic when it's done

It's the Lilliput 7" - I've cut off the button area of the bezel to make enough vertical height to squeeze in a slot load dvd drive when I get around to buying it.
