    Moving A/C controlls

In order for me to have a nice install with the screen in the dsh I will need to move my AC controls down. I tried today to see how much they will move and it wasn't much. They had enough cable slack, but the knob that controls the hot/cold air is too short and won't let me move the controls. Is it just a metal wire? Can I extend it somehow? Also how would i know if its a vacuum type? Ty.

What type of car? What year? Some cars have electronic HVAC controls, some have mechanical. You really haven't given us anything to work with.

Ah, good point, didn't see that when I posted. Well, if nothing else, doubling up the data will help when dealing with dumbasses like me.

Look for a thread about the same thing by mutilator and his mini install. There are osmeideas we had in there. There are three types of system - all electronic, vacuum and cable - liek the stuff your bicycle brakes are activated by. You may somehow be able to extend or even replace the cables if that is what you have. You just have to make sure the outer sheath (i love that word ) is fixed so it cannot move with the cable. YOu could use the metal blocks out of the inside of wiring joining blocks to join the inner cable and then rig up some systemt o fix the outer sheaths to something behind your dash - anthing that grips it would work.

I shall look for that thread when I get back from work. Overall though, it sounds like it is going to be a pain to do. Oh well. Thank you very much though.

no probs dude, just look for mutilators profile and click the threads he started. there is also a pug 306 thread with a bit more in but not much. If you can, get right in you dash with a torch and mirrors if needed and see where the cables go. I was very happy when i discovered i can move my AC right down as the cables come up from below.

I just finished reading the thread my mutilator, and he never did post pictures. It seems like I do have a cable type of thing though. Like you would find on bike breaks as it was said. I am still not 100% sure how I would go about extending it. All I need is just to make it about 1-2 inches slonger.

no i did see his aircon controls hanging under his dash at the meet last week! I did say there was just some ideas there.

I would be suprised if there was not enough slack in the existing cables as they are never tight to allow easy assemebly.

instead of joining them you could make a hinged lever with the existinf cable attached one side of the pivot and the new extension cable mounted the other side. I doubt you see what i mean so i will do a quick pic...

...oo you dont have to do it on the opoiste side but i think it is neater and easier to clamp the sheaths.....

Just so you know...I was able to move my cable type controls down in my Jetta and they got darn tight to turn the knobs cuz the angles of the cables wasn't as smooth as they were ment to be. After a while though the knobs got easier to turn, but they are still more stiff than they used to be. Hope this helps.

BTW- imaxorz, what part of LA you from? I'm in NOLA

    Edit: Yay...post 50!!! I'm almost not a newbie.
