i did this to my explorer i had a tan dash trim i changed it to flatt black
process i used was
sand it down with 60 grit till you cant see the shine dont get lazy on this part cuz it will **** it all up
then to get a smooth feel take like 220 grit wetordry paper 1st sand it down lightly with dry and then wet it and sand it if u have never wet sanded ull enjoy it its fun no dust kicks up - use a spray hose and put it over the piece or have a friend help u out its better then dipping into the bucket with the paper
once its smooth to the touch if u see any spots just sand it down and fix it
then get a can of high build primer and prime the whole piece do atleast 2 coats wait bout 15 minutes between the coats if you find some rough spots use some 220 and sand it down lightly then wet sand just that spot
reprime it and once u like it PAINT TIME if ur gonna do a clear coat over it wait atleast 1 hour after painting and then clear coat and let the clear coat dry for alteast 24 hours to get a nice look HAVE FUN
btw some people will disagree with me on this but this is what i did and i love how mine turned out
