Nice fabrication. BUT how are you going to connect your optical to your unit? I mean you do not seem to consider using USB enclosure and your carpc will obviously not fit between the roof and roof upholster. And having 15 feet IDE cabel is not best idea ever. Sooo.....?

Have you considered popping the face plate off the dvd and painting it to match for a more stealthy look?

I bought a slim laptop to USB adapter already. It looks exactly like those that come with the encolsures. It has two USB running form it. One for data the other for power. I just bought it before doing this project, os there was no need to buy an enclosure.

Im going to put my DVD drive (or my radar detector, unsure) in the same spot. I dont have a sunroof so where the controls go I got a good amount of space.

Im just curious, when my bass hits and when I hit potholes etc, my rearview mirror (directly below this spot) rattles like a *****.

Have you tested it to see if it skips or anything in that spot?

ALSO i wouldnt leave any discs in their when you leave your car.
Ive left CDs in my HU during a hot day and the disc pops out STEAMING hot. I would think that more towards the roof and such, the DVD drive would be recieving (and giving off) alot more heat than lower in the car.

You're going to hide your radar detector in there iwth the front showing? If you are, that is going to block alot of the radar and the detector will be basically useless.

Have you tested it to see if it skips or anything in that spot? .
Nope. My whole setup isn't installed yet. I am not worried about it skipping. It is a laptop drive and meant to be portable and handle bumps I'm sure. I wouldn't worry about it. My CD changer is in my trunk next to my subs and it doesn't skip at all.

ALSO i wouldnt leave any discs in their when you leave your car.

I don't really for see heat being an issue. Usually when a HU in the dash gets hot it is from the sun beaming directly on it. My sunroof has a cover (naturally) and I won't be leaving it open much. So the sun won't apply direct heat on it. I guess if heat "rises" then there may be more? But its not substantial enough for me to worry about at all.

Wow thats really nice looking, good job, really sleek and factory. Is there any thing seprating the drive from the hood of the car? Like some padding or foam? I was thinking that might get hot during the summer, or in direct sun.

The actual cover hides the sunroof motor. That is why you see why it is slanted downward. I really am not at all worried about heat. I live in Seattle and it doenst get THAT HOT around here. darn it.

I tore off the felt today and added some ABS to the bottom trim of it to even it out. I am dropping my an auto upholstery shop tomorrow to check prices and to see if they can match it.

I am leaning towards painting the black face the color of my headliner or close to it. My car is a silver color and I have spray paint for that. I think it may look less descreet if it was gray.

The radar dectector does work even in that position. I have mine currently in my glove box just tossed in there, and it works just as well but range is diminished by maybe a couple hundred feet at the most. When I goon the highway (not city driving) I take it out and put it on the dash.

If it was in the headliner I dont thinkthe range would be diminshed at all because it has a lot less to go thru than the firewall and engine, being in the glove comp.
