    matching ABS plastic black

What spray paint best matches the standard ABS plastic black you find in most cars? Im doing my dash...for the 3rd time and am trying to get it right this time.

Also I know people stress light coats. Just so I know, how much light coats am I looking at doing before the job is complete?

Also is it neccessary to sand again after primering? if so, what grit should I use?

Matching texture is an art form. There are several different ways. Depends on the plastic you need to match. I have done things like spray a heavy coat of paint and lay a piece of vinyl on it to get the texture. Also have used old school crackle paint to get texture. My favorite product is texture paint from SEM. You can get it in a spray can...I shoot it from a gun. If you use this product you can vary the distance between the piece and the product...this will change the texture, amount of coats will change the texture, and you can lightly sand it after coated to change the texture. Best bet it is to experiment. Also if you have two pieces of plastic that touch each other is best to recoat both so they match.

sem is a great product, i've used it before with great results. if you aren't up for the task of painting and texturing it yourself you can do what i did for my car and send it to leathermagic They'll retexture and dye the panel to match a supplied sample. the quality is great!

I just used some american tradition flat black from lowes. so really any interior paint would do well.

I thought it looked ok ... but the usual reaction from people after asking how I did the plastic is "this is paint?!?!?".

SEM is good stuff from what I hear ... and I had no texture to deal with.

As far as technique ... I did about 3 coats of primer wet sanding after each coat (the first coat was almost completely wet sanded off) ... then another 3 or 4 light coats of color (wet sanding between again ... but not after the last)

scott, how much was it to get yours done?

$65 for the whole piece. it came out looking stock and i'm really happy with it. They don't advertise the service on the website but you can call them and they'll do it. The price they quoted me was the max price for any standard retexture/dye job that they do.

yeah, mine had a base coat on it but that is only because i had originally painted it then decided i didn't like it. I think they use their own primer anyways so it isn't necc.

Scott, was that www.leathermagic.com? I looked at their website and their products but as you said, they did not show any advertising about service and repair. I just wanted to make sure I was calling the right people. Your dash trim came out great.

    Thanks,

    Craig
