    (sadly, I can't recess it down into the dash too far, the heater pipes are down there. About 4" maybe, which'd be great - start it just above the clock

    Yup, like recessed in a bit to stop light from the windscreen getting at it. And mounting a fan in the cowl to clear the heat out the back.
