LED display in Rear view mirror

    Hello all,
This is my first post, but I have been lurking a while. Thanks for all of the useful tips by the way.
So to my question. Is anyone familiar with glass etching techniques or other ways of possibly turning a rearview mirror into a partial display. The feature comes stock in many cars and often displays temperature, direction, or time. I was interested in extending an LED display from a radar detector to the mirror keeping it low profile and also easily viewable. I've thought about potentially replacing the mirror with a stock mirror with the appropriate display space, but it seems to interesting an endeavor to not attempt on my own, and I like the courtesy light attatched to the stem of my rear view mirror. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also, If there is a dim feature on the mirror that means it acts on some sort of prism which refracts the light so would the front glass on the mirror be somewhat like a two way mirror. If so then there's not any need for etching, just a display bright enough to show even when brightlights or sunlight hit it.
    Thanks,
    dan
P.S. here's an example of what I mean. http://tunertricks.com/blog/gallery/?album=radar&img=5 ...Thanks again

just search ebay, there are loads of them. they have composite input. someone on here has one. They would be very good for putting GPS directions and speedcam data up on. as well as rear view camera (using IR LEDS for night vision )

Thanks for the responses guys. I looked around E-bay, I want to keep my Saab 9000 Mirror though and everything else seemed a bit gaudy. By the way, the led's are a display removed from a redar detector and extended up so that it looks like a stock compass rather than a radar detector, which happens to be illegal to use here. Also I considered possibly molding it into the bottom of the mirror which might make a bit more sense. Here's an example of the look I'd aim for. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ayphotohosting ...this would be of course without the controls. But it might be interesting to relocate my lilliput controls there, of course losing the dim feature, and that also gives me a plastic frame of sorts to begin construction. I'll let you know if the dimensions will work.
    Thanks again,
    Dan

Here's a thread where it was discussed. I'm still interested in trying it out and bought a couple mirrors to try it on but have gotten sidetracked putting a new computer in first.

I looked around but did not find much that specifically referred to the kind of approach I'm talking about. Bugbyte, could you repost that link as it didn't seem to work. Thanks

Thanks bugbyte. Seems like an interesting place to start. Any other suggestions are more than welcome. I think I'll look into what can be done, and what some professionals have done. I'll bring back any new info or progress as I go. Thanks for all your help guys.

    which radar detector?

Ive seen some installls where the person opened the mirror and used a razor blade to remove the shiny coating. Once you do that it should be clear. Then you could mount your display behind that portion and route some wires. For added stealthiness? you can take some mirror tint and put it behind the cleared portion. This will give the rear view mirror a more uniform appearance. The only thing you sacrifice if you do that is some of the light output from the LEDs. Good luck!

Just take the mirror glass out and get a glass shop to cut you a couple samples of half, 3/4 or whatever different kinds of half-silvered mirrors they have, figure out what kind of look you need and use that..

mind you, that little lever you flip the mirror up with when car headlights behind you are too bright won't work unless you get the right kind of glass..

    good luck!
