Boot Build Planning Advice

I have attached a few pics of my boot (trunk to all you yanks :) ) and was wondering what would be the best way to go about fabricating a build.

I was thinking of first mounting some thin 1/2" MDF to the floor on to which i can mount the components then above this mounting a false floor so the amplifier and pc will mount flush.

I would like to then tie in the corners but am having dificulty in getting my head around the best way to do it. Could anybody please shed some light? The last pic shows the lid of the pc case and the amp. There will also be a Nos bottle mounted in there somewhere.

You call that a trunk. Perhaps that passes for a "boot" where you come from, but that thing is small. I have shoe boxes that are bigger (I have size 13 feet) Please tell you me drive a Porsche Boxster, and have a front "boot" as well. Or perhaps an Elise, where I am willing to overlook the lack of boot space.

O.K. Now on topic.

What is your final goal. Will you be installing some subs in the back, or just the computer. What is the amp for. Do you still want room for luggage, assuming you can get any in there now. A little more info about your setup might help.

Yeah I realise there is not much space :) The car is a MGTF very similar in spec to an Elise just a bit more practical. There won't be any subs in there as it is mid engined and I don't really see the point. The amp is to run a set of components in the front and some rears.

If you would like to see what I have planned and the progress I have made so far I have an ongoing blog at http://www.millne.com I am not really bothered about room for luggage but I don't see the point in building up the floor and wasting the little space I have for no reason.

There may be a few little bits an bobs in addition to the PC and Amp but only very small things like a little widget for OBD-II and a relay control board.

I am looking for suggestions really as to layout more than anything and how to go about starting the thing off.

Well, there are so many places you can mount the amp and the computer.

If you keep them where they are now, you can cover them with a false floor. Just let the floor cover the entire trunk, to keep things even. Or just cover the small lowered section, so that you have more room for luggage.

Or, you can try mounting them where I have red squares on your pics.

Yeah thats what I had in mind for the false floor. The problem is once that is in how do I go about fabricating the sides to make it all tie in nicely. I was thinking of using grey alcantara for the false floor and then black leather for the sides, that would match my interior nicely.

The sides of what. The sides of the trunk. The walls? You can either leave them the way they are, or you can cut some wood, and over them, or perhaps FG the sides (Allot of work and not worth it) or some colored or smoked plexi. You can also use Plexi for the false floor, though it is not as strong as the mdf.

I think me personally, I would use some MDF for the false floor. Make sure it extended all the way to the walls of the trunk. I would then cover it with some nice carpeting. Perhaps I would cut some "windows" in the MDF, and mount Plexi in the windows, so I could see the computer and amp underneath. You could even light them with some neon or something if you liked. I would leave the sides/walls of the trunk the way they are.

Or, I would mount the units on opposite sides of the trunk, on the walls, and create false walls. That would require the whole trunk to be covered with something, but it might look good, stock, and leave you lots of boot space.
