Question on guide coats and filling/smoothing

When you are in the process of filling and smoothing with a body filler, is it recommended to spray a guide coat of primer onto your work to let you see low spots and pin holes? If so, is it ok to then add more filler over the primer in the low spots after youve sanded down the guide coat? Or should the primer be sanded out before you add more filler?

In my experience, primer sticks to filler, filler sticks to primer, just make sure its grease, dust and dirt free.

you don't have to take the primer off before filling more. the best technique is after you think your part is smooth, spray it with red oxide primer, then a coat of gray primer. once that is dry, sand it again. the low spots will show up as gray spots. fill these with filler, then repeat.
