I Have Metal Sheets - How do I Add Screw Holes

    Guys,

How the heck do you make the screw holes for a mother board etc ?

I want to be able to screw some mounts I have so I have a number of options to do this ( and I explaine because the above question is pants )

    1) Nut and Bolt senario
    2) Nut rivited ( some how ) in to the metal sheet
    3) Screw threds boared in the the metal sheet

I know there are ways to do this as I saw it done once on a HTPC - but I have no idea what the tool or skill is called or even how to.... Please help

    Thanks

    Terran

Hang on, let me just grab the Tiny Totts spoon.

Make a template, drill some holes, tap, screw in standoffs , attach mobo

There that wasn't too difficult was it

Go to your local hardware store and ask them for a tap handle, taps, oil, and screws to match. Drill a hole with the bit included with the tap, screw the tap into the hole just like a screw, screw it back out, your hole is now threaded. Its simple. keep a light coat of oil on the tap and metal during the process.

Or you can get standoffs that you screw into from both ends if you don't have a tap kit handy (can't find a link at the moment but maplin do them)

I got these... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...786940350&rd=1 but I also got the ones you mention.

I though you would still need the threds rather than one hole and bang .... wait there must be a better way of saying that

Any way those plasics ones might be better for me as I have other items like PSU to attach.

That been said like you said option 1 is worst case....

if its sheetmetal, just get self tapping screws, drill them, take them out and replace them with standoffs. its easy that way. make sure you match the screws to the standoffs first.

Ok, maybe this is an easier way.

Drill the holes in the steel plate (No threading required).
Turn the standoff upside down and attach to plate with the pan head screw.
Mount mobo over threaded part of standoff.
Use another standoff to secure mobo to standoffs on plate.

    Just like this....

how thick is the sheet metal?
if it is regular sheet metal i think it would be to thin for you to put thread the hole for the screw, ie, you wouldnt have enough threads to secure the stand of to properly
I would just bolt the standoff to the bottom of the sheet. it is much easier
