Replace Civic 96-98 heater control panel with 99-00 panel

I have a 1996 Honda Civic LX. Take a look at the Honda Civic 96-98 control panel (attached civic9698.jpg). It would be a bit tricky to install a touchscreen. Now take a look at the 99-00 control panel (attached civic9900.jpg). It's like Honda meant for a touchscreen to go there!

But... how hard would it be to convert the car to use the 99-00 control panel? I am thinking that I really want to go this route, because it would give it a completely OEM look.

the fact that the 98 uses sliders to control the heat and cold and the 00 model uses wire to control heat and cold means that it would be pretty hard as it's electoronic VS manual

I could be wrong and someone please correct me but i don't know how u can do it.

Hi!

Well I have a Civic 98 and I saw also the 99 dash... I tought of doing it but from what I red on different civic forums... you almost have to change the hole dash and everything that has to do with air behind it... I had a link on the conversion and it was soooo much trouble for nothing but I can't find it...

I have another idea... I have a model with the tape deck option kind of like under the dash... Like this guy: 98 Civic Car PC

But I`m relocating the part with the air control where he put the screen... it fits with little modification and the cable for the sliding temp just need to be shorter... I'm not losing the cup holders also... And then I have a empty canvas up there (going headunit less) to put my screen, dvd, volume button, leds and others....

Interesting idea.... so basically you are replacing the tape deck with the existing HVAC controls? I didn't even think about that.

But it won't do since one thing on my todo list is computer automation of climate controls. The 99-00 conversion will set the stage for that since it involves the use of a servo motor to control air mix vs. the cable.

ive just bought a 99 ek9 CIVIC TYPE R With double din slot, not sure if have screen (lilliput) there or at bottom, i cant do the fabricating myself and not sure where in miflands uk will do it for me at a good price

Check out http://putrightpc.com/projects/carputer for an example of what can be done. The only modification to that I want to do is come up with a cover for the LCD that rolls down when car is turned off and rolls back up when the car is turned on. Kind of like a garage door if you will. The idea of course is that if a thief looks in the window he doesn't see the LCD and hopefully thinks there isn't even a head unit and suspects nothing.

If I can figure out how, it would be totally sweet to make a cover for the LCD that opens and close when the car is turned on and off. I'm picture sort of a "miniature garage door opener" assembly if you will. That way if a thief looks in, they see a piece of plastic, not LCD.

I think I have a solution in relation in replacing your 96-98 control panel with a 99-00. I have a 99 civic, (RHD) and the control panel looks the same as the 96-98 model. I have got a direct bolt on climate control system that replaces your factory climate control. Servo / bracket and attachments are included for a 20min install. The unit plugs into your original harness, and there is no need for additional wiring. There is also an optional LCD display which displays the vent location heat/fan settings.
All you need is to use this unit, get rid of your factory climate control and use that exta space to fabricate your 7" or 8" touchscreen monitor!
Specifications:
- Direct bolt on to original harness
- no addition wiring/mods needed
- for most civics and accords
- full remote control
- Optional LCD display
- Servo with bracket/ attacments to blend heat/cold
- Rear demister also controlled
- 13 hot/cold setting
- 6 fan speeds
- Unit approx 70mm x 60mm x 25mm (Tiny!)
