7" Touch Screen Mount in AE101/102 Corolla

I'm considering installing a carputer in my AE102 Corolla

Now the only place there is room for a 7" Screen (A double-din slot) is down in front of the gear stick. Now that spot isn't the best position as I'd need to take my eyes off the road for a considerable amount of time to change songs and such.

So I was wondering how other people have done it?

I have considered doing some fairly major modifications to the dash. I was considering moving the AC controls down into the double din slot. Now this would be fairly major 3 of the controls use cables. The other is electric. So what I had considered doing was designing a circuit using a picaxe microchip, to control 3 servos which would then be connected directly to the "arms" which the cables were operating. I'd prefer to keep the aircon "manually operated rather than controlled via computer so that its only audio i loose if the computer crashes.

Then once I have done this get a new dash insert (the cd, aircon, vent surround) and then modify it so that the 7" touch screen then mounts in it.

Here's a couple of images of 101/102 corollas. Neither are mine but the dash layout is very simular. (Mine is a right hand drive, manual)

this is alittle off topic but just out of curiosity, can you take a picture of your taillights? (I know the newer corolla's are the lexus is300 with different head/taillights) but I just want to see what '97 non-american(toyota makes the corolla ugly for america) looks like.

Uh, what are you smoking? The Corolla is FRONT wheel drive. The Lexus IS-line is REAR wheel drive. It's the same as the JDM Altezza.

Same tail lights... maybe, but doubtfull.

If you're saying that the Corolla is the same body as the US Lexus IS-300, no way. Again one is front wheel drive, the other rear.
    Specs: Wheelbase - Corolla - 102.4 inches, the IS-300 is 105.5. Height, Corolla - 58.5, IS - 55.5. Weight - Corolla - 2530, IS - 3255.

Manufacturers use platform engineering. The chassis, suspension, subframes are used across multiple lines... They aren't going to use the same platform for a front wheel drive model and a rear wheel drive model. Now front wheel and 4-wheel, sure. Look at the Honda Civic / CRV. Same platform.

Like Acura RSX, Honda Civic, Honda CRV, all the same platform. Or the Toyota Corolla, Geo Prizm.

Oh, the Lexus GX line is the Toyota 4-Runner. The Highlander is the Camry platform, the same platform that the RX is built on.

No, Acura didn't start from scratch. Platforms are shared between Honda and Acura. Bodies change, interiors change.

Birdie - sorry for jackin' your thread... Cool litlte car BTW.
