If I were you I would get a motorised in dash 1 din unit and mount it upside down so that the screen dropped down when it came out rather than going up

That way you get to keep your TT chrome hideaway plate and you dont need to worry about fabrication etc, I dont think you got the space for an in dash build, not unless you go the ghetto route

Is there a way to remove and reattach the outer layer (the textured stuff)? I suppose that would make it pretty easy if I bought a second center piece as well...

There are a lot of textured paints... just keep your plate to a big paint shop and find the one that looks good for you... I did it...
