Yea, I sat and looked at it and saw that its only 4 bolts..... one thing I do not see is that air bag cable. I know that it has driver and passenger airbags, is it possable that they did not make a switch to turn it off and on when some1 is sitting in the chair? I see that my Ford Focus has the cable!!!!

    We're not worthy!!!!

Joe. as so many others have said, this is awesome.

I will be attempting this at some point. I have an 02 Escape and I think this is doable.

I don't have the factory HU handy as I'm traveling right now, but measuring it won't be of any help for this since the actual chassis of the OEM HU is not DD. The face is, or close to it, but behind the face is a much smaller chassis.

So, I'll have to measure the cavity at some point and make sure the dimensions look good. If not, when I'm ready to get going on this, I'm hoping I can work with you back and forth to come up with a design to work.

Did have a question though. Where'd the volume control go? Maybe I missed it, but I thought you manufactured a volume control out of an old hacked mouse and put it in that panel where you now have the on/off switch and the rs232 connector to modify the lcd settings. I probably missed something in the thread though. 36 pages and I'm sure I probably did.

Thanks again and please don't go anywhere as I definitely want to do this and will surely need your help.

    Hey there Joe!
First off, like you've heard many times, Congrats on one of the most through documented projects I've EVER ran into! Very commendable that you've continued to document your work even after you've finished your project. Congrats!! I just have a couple of questions.....

I pondered for awhile and came up with quite a few different ideas. I decided I wanted to do it cheap, like $10 cheap so I thought about it some more. One more requirement important to me was visually pleasing. I ended up buying a male/female rs232 plug and small PCB from radio shack, total cost $8.26. I had 22 guage wire in the computer toolbox. Here is what transpired after a few hours. Now I can just plug in the small board I made and have my LCD buttons, once finished adjusting I just unplug the "button key" and am just left with a techie looking serial port on my dash

I only needed to run six wires for the 5 buttons, they were all ground referenced so it made it quite easy. Final product works flawless and snaps/unsnaps into place.
Did you solder the wires directly to the button leads on the original board? and if so, thats a really smart idea! i like the serial port!! keeps everything looking clean and saves you the hassle of having to mount those buttons or cut 'clean' holes for them.

Also, just an little idea for you....I can't really remember how you turn your PC on, but while swimming through all the forums on this site, i ran into a great idea!!!
Startup / Shutdown Controller w/ LCD Char Screen
It's a startup/Shut down controller. There are some clever ppl on this site, just thought i'd pass this idea on.

Thanks for all your ideas and again, Great job man! Keep it up!

Thank You! I enjoy the feedback just as much

Yes, I soldered the wires directly to the switch pads on the LCD controller. Was a very easy mod to complete.

I turn the PC on/off with a simple switch. Since I run a read only embedded OS I just kill the power (hard off) when I am done using the system. I used to have my ignition controlling the PC but found it more convenient to just have a simple on/off switch since I can kill the power whenever, even in mid operation, it does not effect or hurt the PC any. Much love for XPE!

Good luck on your engine and carPC, looks like it will be going into a nice ride!

Thanks Joe , what an impressive thread. Spend the last 2 days reading it and just wanted to say that I enjoyed following along with your project.

I can't wait to get my project under way, I just removed my motorized Pioneer dvd unit and am now making way for my car pc. (I'm tired of the closed off system)

I was going to use a vroomPC-2 case and install the pc under a seat, however i am going to take some measurements in my dash as I think that might be a much sleeker and convenient place to install everything.

Thanks for the ideas. Keep up the good work.

    Xpe

I just read through all 36 pages of this thread. . What an awesome job you have done.

I see the XPE was available a while back as an ISO, but is no longer so.

Do you have docs on getting it going? I'm about to start this project for my 2000 Explorer, and plan on using all the same hardware as you (including the Microsoft USB mouse from Streets and Trips 2007).

I'm good with computers, so just some summaries would prollie work well too.

    Thanks.

XPE is available on the Microsoft site for free. It's a "trial" edition, but the components you need are there for the taking.

I found XPE trial edition and I have a copy of vmware installed on my latop for testing. I was wondering if I could get a bit more info from Joe about his ISO he had, and some of the config contained in it to create my own.

    Thanks.

    Hello Guys,
Here are a few Components that may help you to start out - there's also a full WinXP component similar as to what you'll find in a normal fully loaded XP PC - use that and remove components to make an image that will suit your needs.

    Enjoy.

Start by reading this thread, it has all the setup information for minlogon, EWF and HORM. After that you can either strip down your own copy of XP using nlite or get your hands on a pre-stripped version.
