10 hours is a pretty long time. most of the time i work with resin it's set up hard within 20 minutes. i think the ratio i usually use is 6-11 drops of hardener per ounce of resin. Have you got pictures of your test? I'm curious to see what the result was.

10hrs is a very long time to cure. If you find that it's taking a long time to dry just add another thin layer over top but mix with extra hardner. Even the odd slow batch I had was 3hrs max.

    Hi there ppl,
ive been searching and searching for an answer to my question, and have not been able to find an answer.

    Here is my question,
MUST i use MDF with the fiberglass? or can i use regular fiberboard? is there an end-project difference? im assuming the MDF will hold up better, but since its going to be sealed with fiberglass, wouldnt it hold up better? I have access to a large quantity of regular fiberboard that i can use for free, so i want to know if i can do this and have my sub enclosure be semi durable.

no, you don't have to use MDF. fiberboard is not as dense as MDF and its more prone to the kind of chipping and spalling that make for ugly parts, but it's perfectly acceptable to use with fiberglass. As far as making sub boxes goes, there are a whole string of reasons why MDF is preferred. Dimensional stability, density (which translates to it's acoustic properties), ease of machining to name a few. It's not that expensive. I think you can purchase a 4'x8' piece from any lowe's/home depot for $20. That will make darn near any box you can dream up.

currently, I believe MDF is cheaper than plywood....why wouldn't you use it?

I guess, but if you're skimping on $20 for a project like this, I have to wonder what your thought process is...fiberglass resin and mat, gloves, masks, etc....can't spend $20 on a decent base to go off of?

I would imagine that there are many people (right or wrong) that don't spend the extra money on protective gear. $20 might not seem like a lot to those of us with money, but when times are tight it makes a difference. I remember when money was tight I would do what ever it took to save a buck or two. You can't put a price on your health but it's hard to see it that way when your young and broke.

I would put that extra money into a mask before anything else.

I'm going to give this a go as well since I just got two 10" Polk Audio Subs db104. I have a dual trunk battery mount already done so these subs will have to go in front of them with the case going above the battery for extra volume. It's .66 cu ft. on both sides. fun fun. I want to make them as symmetrical as humanly possible which may be difficult. Also part of the sub box will have a continued slab that covers the battery. Here are some pictures of what I have to work with.
