Hey everyone. My name is Justin and this is my first post. I was hesitant to post a question as my first post because Im a "nooob"... haha. But Im in kind of a bind and need alittle advice. I did some searching this morning, and didnt really see anyone else with my same situation. Ive been working on cars now for the better part of 11 years, and I played with fiberglass for the first time last night. I have to glass a part of my dash, as well as make a box once I feel comfortable using it. Last night I was fiberglassing a heater box that Im working on. Im doing a drivetrain swap into my 87 Firebird, and wanted to modify the heater box to accept the newer A/C components. (no custom hoses now)...
Here is my questions. The pieces of the heater box were secured. The first batch of resin that I mixed up seemed good. I brushed it on, layed a layer of cloth on it, all seemed well. Then all of a sudden the resin in my container was hard. Ooops...too much hardner right?
My second batch, I thought I had the hardner right. So I put another layer of resin and cloth down. That was all I needed because I only needed the fiberglass to cover a couple small gaps and to seal the box. I let it sit from about 10 pm and checked on it this morning. Most of it seems dry and hard, but there are still a bunch of tacky areas. This has me concerned only because Im going to be painting this thing before installation.
I set the box in an area that I know will get good sun today, so Im hoping that it was just too cool last night to cure, and that the sun will "bake" it into submission... But...if I get home, and its still tacky...does anyone have any suggestions as to what my next step would be?
Would I mix alittle more resin with alittle extra hardner, brush it all over and let that cure??? Kind of make a hard shell over everything again?

Lol...funny you should say RSX... I was looking over a Type-S the other day. But...right now I have the bird, a lifted Jeep Cherokee, and a motorcycle. Enough toys for now.
I bought a 99 Camaro LS1 Six Speed that a guy slid into a pole with. Im swapping the entire drivetrain and bunch of other goodies over to the 87 TA. My old motor and trans were starting to give me issues. Plus the guy was running 11.20s all day with the camaro... So it should be a fun improvment over that 305 that was in thereHere is a quick pic of the car not to get too far off subject...
Ive been looking on this site for a couple of years now, before there were actually forums set up like this. When it was just a list of cars and peoples pictorials. Atleast I dont remember a forum. I wanted to do a Carputer in my blazer really bad, but then I got rid of it. The TA is fun enough to drive without worrying about a computer screen. However, as soon as the motor is in, Im going to build a slick box for the rear and a couple of 10s or 12s if they will fit. So Im sure Ill be searching the threads for info soon on that!

Haha taking it all off isnt an option I want to explore at this point. lol. The hardner was liquid. The stuff that I had in the bowl was hard this morning. And everything on the box seems hard. It just has a tacky feel to it in some places. Im hoping it was just the nightime coolness and dampness that hindered its curing. The sun should do a decent job of it, if not, I might try to mix up some resin with PLENTY of hardner so I know it will set up, and glaze the whole thing over again. Its not a structure piece, so as long as I can get a good coat of paint on it, Ill be happy. Cant even really see that much of it once its installed.

Throw sawdust on it. As long as it's hard it's not really a problem. If you're really worried about it, mix up another batch of resin that's a little "hot" (more hardener than necessary). You're supposed to use about 14 drops of MEKP per cup of resin. I usually just eyeball it. Just put a little more than this in there and paint it on top. When it kicks you should have a nice shiny non-tacky surface.
Awsome..thats what I needed to hear. Whats the deal with the sawdust?? Will that just dry it up...then sand away before I paint it? Thanks for the advice!

The sawdust just stick to it so it doesn't feel sticky to you anymore. Another option is to just prime it and wait a day and then sand it.
Leave it in the sun for a bit then check on it, it may of been too cool to cure.
