Lightbulb DJiK's Spare Wheel Subwoofer Enclosure Design

I've been looking to increase trunk space and reduce weight in my 90.

After 24 hours, I'm done with the design.

First, the subwoofer (an Audiobahn AW1206T 1,100W RMS):

Next, its new location in the car:

...and how it looks on top of the spare wheel:

    Now, to the design.
After taking measurment, I mostly used Google's SketchUp to model it in 3D.
(It was my first time using the program).

Disclaimer: If anyone says it looks like a toilet bowl, be advised that I'll fishsmack you.

Anyway, as you can see the "box" is based on two octagons.
I figured it'd be easier to cut 16 (8x2) walls than try and do an even circle.
The smaller octagon will be placed inside the rim and the larger octagon would rest on the tire.
The air volume of the enclosure comes to roughly 1,766 in³ (=1.02 ft³; 28.9L).
According to WinISD and all given dimensions/measures the sub is tuned to 47.5Hz.

Cool idea. I've been wondering how I should mount my sub, because I don't want to lose trunk space either. Your idea might just work.

Can't wait to hear what you think of the sound once it's built.

Yeah, actually xdjxklusivex and I have been talking over its alternatives as you posted this question.
I don't want to go that route for 3 reasons:
    1. I've never applied fiberglass before.
    2. I want to keep the structure relatively simple -- for dimension purposes.
    3. Nobody is going to see it as it will be a part of the trunk's floor; so I don't need to make extra nice edges and clean corners.

you could possibly form the fiberglass around the spare and still retain the spares functionality...unless you need the airspace. i can show you how to work with fiberglass ifyou are interested.

oh....is it me or does that look like a wooden toilet?

    -edit-
ah nevermind...damn it. ijust read your entire post and you are retaining the spare with that setup. i say go for it, it'll be a lot cheaper and easier then fiberglass

    That saved me a reply.

I guess I should've made this clearer for everyone: The enclosure is going to be sitting on top of the wheel.
Better yet, I'm thinking of fastening the whole thing down to the same nut that's currently holding the spare in place.

On another note: Scott, by any chance have you got some leftovers of that sound deadening material you used when you redid your trunk?

I messed up on the volume measurements.

    This is closer to reality.

I'm getting 47.5 Hz in WinISD with the new measurements now.

    Funny

You start with inches even have some measurements up to 9 digits after decimal

And end up with a volume in liters

Would that not be easier to start rightaway decimal

Habits stay as long as we are living !!

I hope you're really good with a tablesaw. Otherwise those angles will drive you crazy. I wish my spare tire well was that huge.
