sounds like your flat black color is not bonding well to the texture paint. See if you can get ahold of an adhesion promoter like Bulldog. Spray that on the texture, then spray your flat black color on top.

yeah, or use a better paint for your final trim black...

I use a paint made by sem, it's pro stuff auto body supply house....

no problems at all... & it's flat enough to not look glossy, but not flat enough to dry like powder... if you use a true "flat" black, you'll get EXACTLY what your discribing...

this is the stuff, & the finish it gives...

this is very durable, non fading & even semi flat finish that matches most plastic trim..

Where would I get these paints you guys are describing? Would somewhere as common as a Home Depot have them? Or are they more speciality store stuff....

Both sound like great ideas, and I really like that black trim paint.

I have a stupid quesiton though: What if I was to go over this board very lightly with a gloss black spray paint. Would that screw it all up? And would that just give me a completely glossy black? Or would it just seal in the flat enough to make it all look right without making it all too glossy...

I just came back from Wal-Mart (its the only thing thats open at the moment) and I got a can of gloss black, and a lint brush for the powder. The lint brush actually picked up alot of the excess pretty well. I'm thinking that a once over with a little of the gloss black should do the trick. But then again, if I knew what I was doing I wouldnt be in this mess to begin with.....

if you don't want a glossy finish, i wouldn't mess with glossy paints. I know you can order SEM paints like turbocad6 mentioned if there's no local supplier. I think your best bet is to track down an auto body supplier. Ask your local collision repair center where they buy their supplies. One other thing you might try is going to your home depot/lowes/woodworking store and hunt down a can of Deft clear lacquer. Deft is an interesting character. You can spray lightly and get a clear lacquer coat that dries flat to satin, or you can go a little heavier and after a few layers you can get all the way up to a glossy finish. Lacquer is also pretty benign in the presence of latex and rattle-can paint so you'll find it quite easy to work with. Check it out and let me know what you think.

it's gonna look gloss black... if that's not what you ultimately want, don't start piling all kinds of crap on this, wait one more day & do it right...

automotive bodyshop supply stores are the best source, if you can't find that & must go with something off the shelf, check home depot or lowes for krylon semi-gloss..... anything semigloss should be ok...

also, did you think of just washing the piece as it is now,,,, if the dry dust is washed off it might be fine as is....

I wanted to go the lacquer route, but to be hoenst I was afraid of the end result.... I just sprayed some test pieces I have: one with the glossy black, and one with a clear top coat I have. Ill let them both dry over night and see what they look like tomorrow. If they both dont look like I want them to, then I will try what you guys said.

That Deft sounds like the best bet since depending on how many layers I put on I get the gloss that I'm looking for. That sounds great. Tomorrow I am definitly doing some spray paint shopping

Well thats one of the reasons I went with the lint brush to pick up the excess and see how that would look. And I think after I picked up most of the flat black powder/dust, this being the end result- Its not what I wanted. After all of that mishap, I feel its too flat

I know I am being way too picky about this, but I want a very specific look. And since I'm not getting it, I am basically trying to settle for the best substitute. If that makes any sense....

Like I typed above, I did some test pieces to see how they come out. If they look good, then I think I dont have to do anything else. If not, then I am going to track down that Deft stuff.... Ill let you guys know what I end up doing.

there are available also "eggshell" clearcoats, clearcoat without the shine, used to refinish & match factory interior trim... that may be overboard cause it's prolly not avail in aerosol, but that's what we use to restore factory plastics & vinyls...

with the texture this is less critical, cause the texture will kill the gloss bigtime anyway to a certain extent..

Thats good to know... Perhaps that would be the best idea period. Thats what I wanted in the begining of all this, was a clear coat that wouldnt shine/gloss..... Interesting.

It sounds like you work in a body shop? Let me ask you a quesiton, I am willing to comepletely sand this down and start from scratch...but, only if I would end up getting what I want. My question is: Is it possible to get the exact look and feel of the bezel trim that I have around the screen?

If you click "View My Progress" in my sig, youll see what I'm talking about. I want the exact look as that beauty bezel around the radio din. Is that even possible? Or is that way to hard and I should give up on that whole idea....
