I've been working on mine this last week... I bought a dead head unit from a guy on vwvortex and gutted it. Cut off a few bits towards the front of it with the dremel, and have successfully attached the bezel to the double din unit. It hinges outwards and up (used cabinet hinges) and have been searching for a decent mini linear actuator to automate the movement. I know I could use part of a CD-ROM tray, but that seems bulky, and I'd like to use the bottom-inside of the new head-unit for a slot-load DVD.

    To summarize...
Shell of monsoon head unit held into radio cage by bottom clips only
LCD siliconed onto bezel, hinges attached to LCD and top of head-unit shell - need a little alignment.
Looking for good linear actuator or similar

I've been taking forever to make any progress on this mainly because I had the requirement of not making any visible changes to the car. I want to be able to pull out the new head-unit and plug in the stock one, swap the monsoon connectors in the trunk, and be completely back to OEM.

I'll take pics if anyone's interested.

Oh, another thing. I found it close to impossible to incorporate the holes for buttons on the bezel. The way I wanted to mount it puts the holes right in front of part of the radio cage. I'm considering using the holes for other functions... or leds... or something shallow in the back.

I'd recommend getting the one without any holes in it to anyone considering the project... I would offer to swap with someone, except I don't want to have to re-silicone the LCD! Like trying to grab hold of a greased up watermelon in a pool.

I took some quick pics tonight and uploaded them to Flickr. Check out the album for more photos. I also ordered a linear actuator for the tilting motion from a place called firgelli.com that's a brand new design with 100mm of travel. cost about $100 so it's expensive... oh well.
