Clear Fiberglass?

So, Id like to make a clear armrest with my DVD player inside, so it would replace the armrest there now. I can use the current one for a mold, But I just need to know if there is a clear or near transparent fiberglass or fiberglass alternative I can use. Ill post pics of what Id like this weekend when I have time to shop and mold!
Is this possible or am I going over my head?

i think you need acryllic casting resing for what you're trying to do. i found a cheap one that works well (i'll have to look at the brand when i get home) but www.smooth-on.com has some great resins that are really east ot work with. you may need to put the mold in a vacuum to make sure you dont have any air bubbles though.

just to be clear... you'd need to make a mold and then us the resin. no fiberglass

So I can use the origional armrest as the mold, without destroying it, and then with that mold, use the resin? Where do I get a vacuum to stop the bubbles?

do you have an air compressor? how thick is this piece going to be?

MAYBE 1" thick...if that. Will the Clear Flex 50 or 95 work? And I think I can get an air compressor.

if you can get an air compressor they have converters that will make create a vacuum from compressed air. I'm not sure how expensive the rigs are but i'm pretty sure that's the easiest way to go about it. i've done 1/4 inch w/o a vacuum and had great results (no air pockets) you could experiment with layering it and see if you can get away with just that and no vacuum.

as far as the smooth on products. i've only used the ozmo...err omo...uhm... the latex mold resing stuff :-) i'm not sure about the clear stuff. if i recall it's pricey.
