    Now for something really different...?

if you have a hatchback, where do you put your subs?

in a box behind the back seats?

thats where mine are. one box, 2 subs, and a 5 channel amp on the top. one nice complete package.

one that ruins the entire idea behind having a "psuedo-sationwagon-thing" where I can fold down the back seats to make a nice deck for, i dont know, big tubs of industrial mayo, tires, mattress? but w/e it'd be nice to not have my box take up the center of this folded down space.

ive always wanted to move my subs to custom enclosures within the side-walls of the back of the matrix.

there is probably 2-4 inches worth of space between that piece of plastic and the outer wall of the car. even more in some places a little more to the back.

ive only seen custom enclosure how-to's on spare tire wells, and molded boxes. but nothing exactly like this, so im sort of stumped as to how to begin.

should I remove the plastic piece, but only after ive attached, say, foam sticks to the back of the plastic that in various places give me a general contour of the metal outer wall of the car? (i have to wonder how id have access to do this without already cutting the speaker hole prematurely)

seeing as how if i create a custom enclosure with the plastic away from the car, that the tolerances would be quite small because placing the plastic/enclosure piece back into place, the back of the enclosure must either rest upon (with foam or something to isolate vibrations, somewhat) or be a little be away from the outer wall.

so maybe, you can see my problem(s)?

i would just build out the area where you drew the boob so it's flush with the part that juts out. that'll giveyou a bit more clearance and you could make a nice cover with some grill cloth to make it look stealth. there was a thread posted not that long ago with some slimline subs that would also benefit you.

I'ma big fan of that location you picked. I did the same with MDF board in my trunk. (Every piece was custom cut and fitted.) There are ways to do it with Fiberglass. I don't have much experience in fiberglass, but the fabrication subforum has lots of good info on that.

The finished enclosure or while you are making it? You might want to ask this sort of thing in the fabrication forum if you mean construction techniques. I was always taught use as much wood for flat areas pieces and then use braces. Then fiberglass the pieces together. Every car is different. I'm not a fiberglass expert though.

As far as the final result, braces where ever you can put them. If you can find a way to hide them that is the best. Mine I screwed/bolted right to the metal braces in my trunk from the inside of the box (this also keeps theivies from stealing it).
