2001 Civic LX - Rear 6x9's

The stock 6x9's here are some horrible pioneer's with a magnet the size of a bottle cap. There are cross bracing tie bars between the trunk hinges that just dodge the magnets on the stocks. The problem here is that any after-market 6x9 will collide with these tie-bars.

I am in the process of some custom modification and fabrication of the rear deck to lift the speaker placement.

What have you guys done to get around this senario? If you've done some work on it please post pics.

Do your speakers sometimes rattle the back piece by the rear window? I have heard a few people say it does. I have an '01 EX and sometimes the back plastic piece starts rattling and it does so for a while.

Good luck though. I still have stock speakers which sound ok to me, but I know they are not the greatest! Not even close really.

are those "cross bracing tie bars" you refer to the torsion springs that hold the trunk open? Because if so you could probably just get rid of those and use a gas strut to open the trunk instead. Might save you some sanding and finishing.

I'm not sure. I'll have to check and see what their purpose is. All I know is that there are two bars that hook form one hinge to the other. I'll have to post a pic tomorrow sometime.

yeah, i'm pretty sure that's what that is. If you're careful and remove the rods from the trunk hinge, you'll find the trunk unsupported.

That's what they were.

Do they gas suppurts for the trunk bolt on or do would I need to fabricate a bracket for them?

i'm not terribly familiar with your car, but I think with some clever positioning you could bolt it on.

Of course, most times it's just more convenient to fabricate a bracket.

i think it might work best if you put the gas springs in line with the trunk hinges, parallel to the rear deck and just have them push towards the rear of the car. That should cause the trunk to rotate open without having to expose any fab work or new parts.

why don't you get some speaker adapter and put some 6.5" speakers back there, you may be able to find some shalow mount 6.5"s easier then 6x9's or just disconnect them perminately and improve your soundstage.

How would disconnecting them get me an improved soundstage?

I guess I could remove them to let the sub sound come through the rear deck (not exactly open air like a hatch but better then having to go through the seats), puts some mid's in the side panel, and tweeters in the rear column.

What do you think?

what he means by improved soundstage is that without the rear speakers making noise, your ear can better distinguish location and direction of instruments, voices, etc...

not to mention there will be a slight improvement in clarity because all speakers will color the sound to some degree. So the fewer speakers you have producing the same frequency ranges, the fewer variations of the same sound you have, and so in the absence of random reinforcements of the signal, tuning becomes a little easier and the music will be made more clear.

For example, think about when you're listening to a choir sing. If they're good, they're all singing the same notes, but it sounds loud and seems to be filling the room coming from everywhere. When they all shut up and let the soloist do his/her thing, you can tell right where the sound is coming from and clear as a bell.

There are other reasons for the clarity as well... delays, resonances, etc... both very complex things to figure out inside a car.

Hope that all makes as much sense outside my head as it did inside it.
