    Fabrication Suggestions on Screen Placement

    Hi guys,

I've got a 89 e30 325 BMW touring. I'm trying to place my screen in the dash and I'm having a hard time deciding what to do.

My first direction was looking at the e90 dash. I liked how it had the second hood over the screen.

So i've been slowly making a Hood for my Lilliput. (Thanks GoHybrid for the tips)

as you can see, I've removed the air vents in order to make room for the screen.

As it is now, the screen just fits.

With the e90 the screen is recessed in the hood, making it further back and away from the sunlight.

My question is, is it worth it to cut the dash to make the screen sit further back? Pros? Cons?

My biggest thing is that if I cut the dash I won't be able to return it back to normal. Do you guys think it would be better cosmetically and functionally if I were to recess the screen more?

I eventually want to redo the bottom dash area to reclaim my air vents and try to mirror the look of the newer BMW.

I'm trying to make it as factory as possible and design it the way BMW would have done.

Are you going to be able to reach the screen if you recess it like BMW did? The stock screen isn't a touch screen is it? It's every move is contolled by the mighty iDrive!

At the moment it doesn't quite look standard because it is sitting so far forward. It looks like a modification. If you really want the BMW look then I vote recess it and be damned. (Easy to say when it ain't my Bimmer.)

there in lies the dilema. If I cut, I could probably get a more factory look but it would involve making a cut that I couldn't reverse. Dang.

I might just leave it to be able to return to stock if need be. I'll post more pics once I vinyl the hood. Just sanding and bondoing right now. Always open to suggestions though

Recessing is nice only and i repeat only if you dont want touch screen. If you plan on using the griffin or similar devices then go ahead. If not then dont recess. Recess has a benefit of better readability in the daytime and screen isnt viewable from outside the car(Security)

Now you can always buy a new dash if you want, so go ahead and hack away

For the space you have I would have gone with a 8.4" widescreen or 10"

Remember to wear protection when sanding.
