    Housing Project

    Good Day!

I am planning to put CARPUTER on my Austin Mini Cooper, I was hoping if anyone can give me tips and procedure on how to create Fiber Housing. List of brands could be helpful. It will be my first time to create fiber housing or fiber dashboard since the classic mini's dashboard is small.

I hope someone could teach me how.

    Thanks

I'll be happy to help you learn how to work with fiberglass, but for future reference you'll get better responses if you focus your questions better.

For example, creating a fiberglass dash is a HUGE and complex undertaking that is not for the weak of heart or the inexperienced. It would help to see photos of your current car, and perhaps a sketch of what you intend to do.

For the computer housing, again, it's different in every case (no pun intended!). You say you're planning on putting in a carputer... what kind? where do you intend to place it in the vehicle?

The other thing i strongly recommend is reading the stickies as well as searching the fabrication forum on topics you're interested in. There are alot of people walking the same line as you and you can learn from their successes and failures alike.

here are some links to get you started:

how to: make a factory bezel
    Fiberglassing Tips?
    Working with Foam

The thing to remember is not to focus so much on duplicating a project as learning the techniques employed.

Good luck on your project, and remember, specific questions will get you more responses and better answers!

Thank you sir. the thrid link foaming method is cool (how do they harden it?) the easiest way to make fiber housing (I hope it is available locally).

What I was thinking was to put a simple computer with 7" touchscreen monitor on the dashboard of my mini and be able to interface it with a in dash car stereo. I dont have an idea interfacing or controlling the car stereo with the car pc (other than having a TV tuner with AM and FM module installed at the PC).

I also bought a RAMLINE tablet pc (with the help of my family overseas) over ebay but still on dispute because the PC was unusable at this time (this was my first plan). But if this push thru, I dont know how to safely start the PC (like what the OPUS power supply do, smart start up with ignition protection stuff).

Thank you for the info, hope to hear from you and everybody again.

okay, well one thing at a time. You should post a list of all the things you want your carpc to be able to do. for example:

    1. play mp3s
    2. play am/fm radio
    3. play DVD movies

that will help decide which hardware you'll need to buy, and which hardware you can throw away. I can tell you that most, if not all people on here will choose not to use an in-dash stereo, instead choosing an external amplifier.

make your list, and we can go from there.
