greddy profec bezel
trying to figure out a way to make this look oem, I have already blacked out the front of the profec..
I have it wrapped in aluminum foil, centered and taped in place..
I am thinking I need to lay a thin layer of something hard like epoxy, runny enough to level its self out and fill all the little nooks.. from then I dont know what to use next.. I dont need alot of material, what do you guys recommend? After it sets I plan on tearing the tape and foil off the back and removing the profec.. this would leave me with the right size hole and I can then sand and shape the surface down before painting..
the space around the sides is very thin, I need something that sets up slowly and is fairly runny so it fills evenly and completely.
unless you guys have other ideas, I havent tried anything like this before but I want it to look perfect..
I am done, thank god GoHybrid lives just down the street from me, this guy is a master at this stuff.. if you all didnt already know that. Took only 3 hours and it looks ******* awesome..
This foam we used is AMAZING, its hard as hell.. lets just say I wouldn't want a crash helmet made out of this stuff.. might as well smash your head against concrete. yet Its easy to work with and shape with 60grit. (See GoHybrid's howto work with foam)
Cut the block to our aprox size
Then we started shaping the sides to the dimensions we needed, this stuff is extremely easy to work with..
Once we got the sides to shape we then started shaping the surface
Then we cut out the hole for the profec roughly with a jig saw and then started sanding that to shape
Then we painted it with primer to fill the holes, then sanded and applied some spackle to fill the big holes, sanded some more, applied another layer of primer, yes yo guessed it.. sanded some more then we used flat black rust-away paint (LOL!) to finish the job up.. Its scary how close it matches the color.
and now to install it and see how it looks.......
all I got to say is WOW, this came out even better than I had hoped!!
Now we plan on making a cast and mass producing these, this is in a MKIV VW VR6 Turbo by the way... if your interested in getting a copy pm me.
Where can I get the foam? I need to mod my cd-rom into the car and would like to use it as the outer bezel?
check at www.freemansupply.com. You probably want to get RenShape 5025 if you want to work it with standard woodworking tools and shape by hand.
Check with them to see about buying a partial board. I expect a 4'x4'x2" to cost somewhere around $100-$150 and will last you for nearly every project you are likely to have for a car. If that's too much, see if they'll provide you with a sample big enough to do what you need.
^^^^^^^^ That guy is the man! Thanks for your help, it looks sooo sweet
Mmmm...his power and influence continue to increase among the masses...we must continue to observe this "GoHybrid"...he could prove dangerous to us...
