Yes. The module will use an analog input as a form of closed loop feedback.

I just got really interested in this. I'm working on software that will steer a tractor. The steering system is electric over hydraulic, so I need to be able to control that valve. It seems that the particular valve I will be using has one electrical input of variable voltage to sense what to do. The simple way to connect it would be to just use a potentiometer. At 50% of the system voltage, it is neutral. Either side of 50% causes it to turn the wheels. Min/Max is at 25% and 75% of system voltage. The amperage requirement is extremely low - less than 1 mA.

So am I just looking for a digital potentiometer?

Yes. Use one that defaults to midrange and uses Up/Down triggers.

I've been watching the fusion brain for a few months now and it looks hughly promising.
I think a true 4-20mA output (probably not the driving end of the circuit either) is the way to go since it can be converted to a voltage output with a simple shunt resistor if needed.

Important:
Toyota, among other auto manufacturers are controlling accessories and options by wire now, more than ever. If you start directly controlling things like blower motors with a motor drive output, the HVAC controls that run through the ECU will wack out and start thowing check engine codes.

I've been holding off on a car PC until the HVAC can be done. When this is available, I'll pull the HVAC and radio and in thier place I'll put in a 10 inch widescreen standing on end.

BTW, I work for a MAJOR electrical controls company (yep, probably that one) and think what you guys are doing is awesome! What are you going to do with the money when you get bought out?

I agree, with a shunt, it has the possibility of being more flexible, but I just don't see the market full of inexpensive sensors or actuators that work this way. Besides, for those who don't have the pleasurable experience of working in industrial controls, voltage is way more intuitive, and the real advantage of 4-20 signals, in this environment, aren't all that important, imho.

I cant give you an example, though you probably cant tell me with 100% certainty that there isn't already an example out there in a production vehicle or that there might be an example next year.

You are right, the flexibility is the best reason - all bases covered...

For someone needing to add a sensor, the market would be wide open also.

I am only new to the forum and i am reading the applications of this device with some interest , but i have a specific comment regarding high amperage motor or fan speed control .

With a digital output of a few bit into a resistor network or an analog output of 0-50k ohms would provide an interface to control of a Pulse width modulator using a simple op amp like a LM324 and a low cost FET with a heatsink you could for under $5 control the speed of a ny Fan upto 30amps or more depending on the FET you use.

Maybe a question for another thread but can this device be used under linux ?
