My plan for mine (when my truck arrives in a couple months) is to build a console to put some two way radio stuff in. On the console will be a couple of rows of toggle switches. On the bottom row of switches, over to the left (closest to me) I plan on installing said volume control. I got some nice aluminum knobs (small, lightweight). I am going to drill one out in the center and fill it with clear epoxy to allow the light to shine thru for easy ID at night.

Not sure what your case will look like but anything to make it easier to mount would be cool.

    Rick

I think in your case, it would be best without a case. The case would be more to make it a standalone knob. If you were going to mount and hide it with your own fittings, you would have to throw the case away.

Just curious if anyone is using it more like a standard computer or tablet accessory. Something they throw in their bag and connect to their laptop or tablet when they need it.

2K1... if you are going to make it standalone, a suggestion... maybe weight the bottom of the box so it says put? Maybe glue some lead sheet or lead shot in the bottom of the box with epoxy. Some rubber on the bottom of the box would help keep it in place. I found some huge rubber sheets on ebay for fairly cheap. Lead in various forms can be found cheap. If you lived near me, I could give you a few hundred pounds for free ;-)

Very good idea. A substantial base to make sure it doesn't flop about.

The question has been raised because these are selling like hotcakes, and I can't imagine that many are going for CarPC use. Many are being used with Android and Windows tablets or even desktop machines. In that case, I think I personally would like to have a case.

Has anyone sourced the ultimate knob to put on this? Something that emits sufficient amounts of the light?

Sounds like a wonderful item that I may add later. I am currently rebuilding my car system.

The way I look at it, I don't need a lot of light, just enough to find the knob in the dark. I am going to drill an 1/8" hole thru a knob center, fill it with clear epoxy, and see how well that works. The fact that I can change colors and intensity will certainly help. Plus, I believe a little bit of light will leak out under the knob as well if it isn't pushed right down against the mounting surface... but this is all speculation that wont be proven out for several months.

Is it possible to reprogram these to pause/play instead of muting? I am thinking of using one of these in a car attached to an Android tablet.

It should be possible. Right now I would have to do it custom for you and then using the bootloader you could modify it. But I might be able to make that configurable if I have some time to work on it.

This is not applicable to the current design but something like this would be really cool:
    http://www.digikey.com/catalog/en/pa...a-series/40607

Rotary knob for volume, move stick right/left for prev/next, etc. USB HID device like this one.

Just throwing out ideas for v2... :-)

Edit: Wow, those are expensive. Maybe another manufacturer makes a similar component...

    Cool but really expensive!

I actually never dreamed these volume knobs would be so popular. I am thinking of making a version 2. So far the ability to reprogram the functionality makes the list, anyone else have other thoughts? More axis of inputs? A button or two, or maybe just headers for them so you can mount physical buttons somewhere? I don't know.
