    Ok!

I have had a more than a few requests and I have selected 5 people across the world to help beta test. There may be more open posts for testing, but hopefully these 5 are good.

For the 2 within the US, you should get the box Wednesday or Thursday. For the 2 in my homeland, you will get it probably next Monday. For the person probably celebrating the diamond jubilee today, next Wednesday. You all should have received a tracking update with a shipping number.

Let me know your thoughts when you first get it. I have a program that I am taking my debug stuff out of that will allow the LED colour changing.

    So the experience should be:

Open the box, plug it in, and volume control works. If you want to change the colour, then you need to install the drivers (but the volume/mute control will always work) and then you can use the little software app to drag sliders and save the colour.

Question, are the lights programmable to either change color with different volume levels or get brighter / dimmer with high/ low volume ??

I suppose it's possible, but that wasn't really the intention. The volume knob doesn't "know" the volume of the system, it just tells it to go up or down or mute it. But what you can do is intercept the OS's volume control info (there's a WIN32 API for us Microsoft folks) and then send colour change info to the device.

The way it is, it will change colour when you send it a new colour command. It takes another command to actually save that colour. So you can have a "default" colour and then change it as much or as often as you want. When you save, you are writing to EEPROM. This should be good for a couple hundred thousand write cycles, but it is still a finite amount.

    1st statement...

The forums are having some significant issues, I had to use the "go advanced" option to reply to this thread (amongst other issues)...

Back on topic, got my volume knob - and in my very limited testing, it works as described. I gave it a quick test on my desktop, which is running bodhi (a variant of ubuntu), and found that simply plugging it in and turning the knob worked as expected. My biggest problem was finding a cable that worked. The default blue light, should work fine for my expected setup - so, I may never even have to program the colors at all. All in All, exactly what I was hoping for. Now to go find a knob to put on my knob (any good places to shop?)!

I'm really interested in one of these - but I don't want to just control volume. I'm hoping to have a system like the BMW iDrive, where you have a knob and push button for controlling the entire interface, and if you aren't in any menu or anything, THEN it works like a volume knob.

I suspect that the only thing needed for this would be a firmware update - is this something that would possible on the shipped units?

I'm a little surprised you didn't go this route out of the box (It's what the Griffin PowerMate does), but I do understand that it makes it plug and play.

Yeah I've been noticing funny things with the forums too. Maybe they are upgrading?

Glad to hear it works as described.

The powermate sends commands and needs interpretation. It is no different then just sending keyboard keys and having your front end navigate through the menus with it. All the actual navigation however would need to be done by you, not me. And in my experience nobody likes to do that.
