  • very high CPU is rendering SD unuseable

Okay. This has become the absolute most frustrating bug to date. It renders SD USELESS. I've tried several versions now and even reverting doesn't fix it.

The problem is in all cases of starting up, returning from standby, or hibernation SD will do one of three things:
    1. Show a backlit black screen until it ****s the bed and ...
    2. your little daemon catches it and prompts to restart...
    3. Starts up and shows the splash page, then hangs while loading something and it's a crap shoot if it is actually going to continue 5 - 10 mins later, or else it STB and we're back to step 2.
    4. It gets past the splash to the actual main menu, then I click "Music" for example, and it takes 5-10 minutes to "load module", or else, yes, you guessed it... randomly it works fine or else it STB and back to step 2. we go.
    5. Lots of cursing and high blood pressure ensues

I mentioned this back in NOVEMBER and STILL nothing has been done to fix this. H

How am I the only one experiencing this?! This is on an Infill G4. Nothing else fancy going on. Stats are in my profile. Screenshot in the aforementioned thread.

This didn't used to be the case back when I first got SD in September, this is a recent bug you've introduced. If I remove SD from my auto-starting, then XP starts and stops cleanly every time. this is ABSOLUTELY a STREETDECK code issue.

This needs to be fixed immediately. I spend more time dicking with this thing trying to get it to start, and more often than not, by the time I do, I'm at my destination. Where I then have to turn off my car. I come out 10minutes later only to go through the same process. I've gotten to the point that I literally just don't even bother turning it on anymore unless I'm going a trip of more than 30 minutes. Talk about unsafe driving conditions: Me trying to push itty bitty dialog box buttons, staring at the screen, and filled with road rage insighted because of your front end!

Why not roll back to an older non-erroring edition until your problem is addressed instead of endangering everyone around you because of the dialogue box demons!

As mentioned, I've tried that. it doesn't seem to fix it.

PLUS even if it did work, it's been since NOVEMBER at least. That's pretty far back and a thousand other bugs would resurface.

Problems returning from standby are usually attributed to some device or driver not properly waking up. StreetDeck will not respond unless it recieves the wakeup message from windows which only happens if all devices successfully reinitialize.

There are several G4s in use here running 1.1.1.0 that do not exhibit this issue. There may be some fix we can do to alleviate the issue, but there is some external cause that is creating this issue for you and until that is narrowed down we can not fix it.

Do you have any addins in your my documents\StreetDeck\Scripts folder?

Do you have any USB or other devices running?

Updated Log file. There doesn't seem to be a way to delete the old one.

Just out of some random dumb luck, I think I stumbled upon what it might be related to. It coincides with what you just said. I have a wireless 3Com USB b/g dongle and obviously a WiFi AP at my house. I pulled into my garage tonight after driving home with SD off (as usual now) however XP was running the whole time i was driving. When I started it up, it came up fine! I was shocked. Not believing mine eyes, I shut down SD and launched it again. Again it worked! So I suspect that you have some new code that is puking when it doesn't find a wifi connection. In this case, XP had made the connection probably as I was driving up to my house, so then SD could continue normally. In the morning, when the car is just starting up, the computer comes up quick (3 seconds or so from standby), but it doesn't have time to make the 802.11b connection before I am pulling out of the garage. Simultaneously, SD is also starting up and you get this race condition. That explains why it doesn't work when I'm out and about either -- I'm not online then.

Now, having said that, and it does give me a glimmer of hope -- SD STILL runs at 50% or more CPU, so when I press "music" or "navigation" buttons, it takes several seconds to minutes for SD to load the module as the CPU jumps to 100% when I press the button. And we're back to the cycle of it possibly working or not and dumping out. Also, because the CPU is so high, using music and nav together is pretty much useless. Either the music skips and studders subtley enough to be extremely annoying, or the navigation voice studders and skips to be equally obnoxious. As I illustrated in that screen shot in the linked thread, XP is at nearly 0% just sitting there without SD running. I can browse with IE or do any other task and never see the CPU spike like that (except for possibly the very initial "load" of a program). So something is going whacky in SD. I am 80% positive it didn't do this in the older versions (I got this in September). I never noticed the CPU or actively researched it, however I do know that the mp3 and nav worked "just fine" back then.

The v1.1.1.6c that Chuck provided drastically improved the experience. At least SD starts up now and is useable again.

As mentioned however, the CPU load is still extremely high and all the rest of this bug report is still valid. Response time is pokey. The buttons and such still trickle in (by that, I mean, they're squares and slowly they pop their graphic overlays on top). The NAV works okay if you don't use the hybrid (satelite imagery). You can literally hear the pitch change and music studdering if you do use images. Same issues as before too, the images pop on, but then pop off as SD can't keep up or something.

But I'm at least able to hear music and that's a big relief. Thanks Chuck.

Just had a thought about this... How is your harddrive? Isnt it full and/or very fragmented? I know HD's expecially at lower RPMs like the G4 get to be the bottleneck once like 90% full.

Far from full. I have the 250GB model. It's like 80GB free. I also do de-fragment on occassion, but honestly, not a lot changes on the G4. I can't get synch working and so I rarely even add new songs or anything. Just the occassional digital mod.
