I'd possibly be looking for one or two of these as well.

look into buying a PSOne screen, moddable to support VGA, and cheap (like $35 at EB games)

By too big do you mean depth, or the width/height measurements? Because the screen falls into your width/height requirements. The casing can obviously come off.

And the people have cut the mickeymouse shaped circuit board to be a square smaller than the width/height of the physical screen. Last I heard, the only circuitry on the "ears" were the sound controls for the speakers and can be chopped off with only a few resoldered points. Worth looking into.

the height, i took apart my Mobile TV M5000 witch is a 5" and i just fits... i wouldnt imagine a PSone screen with its frame...
Ya the casing can come of, but it has to be exactly the size of a 3.5" hdd to meet my requirements. Is it? Hmm, ya it worth another dig-in, if i could find info's on the net it would help, and photos...

and btw, i never got any answer , check your pm man...

Like 2k said, the wires can be relocated. That's only a ground, so there are plenty of other solder points for that wire. No big deal for that.

yes but to fit in my case, it would need to be cut like this:

2K1toaster do you have any more info on cutting the PSOne board? I am thinking of using one as an intermediate (read elcheapo) step before going all out to a touch screen. Since the board is bigger than the screen I thought I would have to mount the board further into the dash and extend any wiring. Cutting down to size would be much better.
