Are these subs really that great?? Anybody?? Obviously I've heard about the renowned W7 and W6 but at only 400 watts RMS do they actually hit hard?

Dude, if you haven't had the treat of owning a jl sub you are doing your self a disservice. I have two(had three) 10w6's and my goodness those things beat hard. One had blown(reason I have two now) after about 2 years of use. They beat so hard I didn't even know it was blown. Anywho those are just tens and I'm sure a twelve would beat even harder since the cone has more leverage to move back and forth.
              Anyhow free bump.

                I have 2 10" W0

                W- ZEROS for christ's sake

                And they friggen pound.

JL subs are built to each (w0, w1, w7 etc) take a certain RMS and PERFORM. Mine take 75-150RMS, i give em 100 and they make anyone go deaf. Its not 2 W7's but its a budget BASS system.

You ever tested it to see what you can hit?

I've never tested mine, but JL is more SQL than SPL. They can get loud as isht, but they are just more clean than anything. Still they are worth money especially second hand and if you have the morey to begin with.

Also jl > audiobahn any day. SQ or SP

JL subs will play lower than any audiobahn crap, all that extra power you are putting into SPL that you never use, so long as it sounds good and its loud enough then thats good enough for me. ive never wanted (or had a passenger want) to turn it up higher than it goes. why anyone would waste money on hitting high SPL levels is beyond me, my hearing takes enough of a pounding being a dj
