  • Why the iPad love, but nothing else?

I understand the iPad is the hot new bauble, but I don't understand why there was a poll question for what car(s) should mp3car's store develop an iPad dash kit for, when there are numerous screens that are both immediately usable by numerous people in the mp3car community, and readily sold by mp3car's store that could use replacement bezels for as well?

I mean, for example I would love to put something larger than a 7 inch screen in my car (a 2008 Dodge Charger) such as an 8 or even a 10 inch screen, but the barriers to entry of a lack of fabrication knowledge/ability/access and the urge to have things look as OEM as possible prevent that. To buy an OEM dash bezel for my car is already exorbitantly priced from dealers and online, so to hack one apart for a project that may fail is something I'd never do, but if there were a company making bezels pre-fab for larger screens (in my car for example, by moving the esp/hazard buttons to the bottom where the useless little tray is) I would buy one immediately.

I understand that with the newness of the iPad it may seem like something that's an instant money maker, but really how many people have iPads compared to standard PCs, let alone want to use them in the car? I imagine whoever makes the store's current dash kits has access to a scanning laser? It seems like a lot of this would be pretty easy stuff for someone with the right tools.

    Am I crazy?

Well, to be fair, currently there are 3 Bugatti's for sale on ebay... not a single Yugo... I guess the Yugo's are the more exclusive vehicle...

          Haha true.

I'm trying to find the thread (it was either on here, or on a Charger forum) wherein a user had their own 3d scanner setup and rapid prototyping gear, as well as the CAD/CAM knowledge of how to adjust the resulting model. I'd love to see if I can get them to scan + print a custom bezel. There's just a way larger potential for something like this than there is for any iPad one-offs.

Probably. There are, what, 1 million ipads out there and how many car Fewer, I think.

The money and momentum are with the iPad right now. It is a much easier jump to put the iPad in the car than a pc in a car. Just easier all around.

If I had to guess, the poll isn't 100% about what model. It's also gauging general interest in the topic.

I dunno, maybe I'm just bitter that there aren't as many levels of customer options for wider support than a singular device. The money may be with the iPad, but only in the short term. Even if there's a huge push toward apps that are carcentric/more while-driving friendly, I seriously doubt that it's going to be replacing the in-dash system any time.

You said it yourself in the first post. Lack of knowledge, lack of ability, lack of access
are barriers to installing a car pc. The iPad solves those problems for a great many people.

It's not a replacement for a car pc, but it DOES do a great many things that a car pc does and it does them in a dock able package and for the AVERAGE person, that is "good enough".

You may not have seen this movie before, but it happens quite a bit. VHS replaced beta even though it was a poorer quality format than beta. The iPod replaced the existing mp3 players even though it had fewer features and less storage. It happens all the time when a product has one attribute the others don't and can't.

In this case, the iPad is simple, compact, and close to the screen size of a double din hu. People look at it and think, hey, I carry this thing everywhere, why not in my car?

Compare that to the average car pc which needs special power supply, custom installation and custom software configuration. Sure, you can do more with it, it's more expandable, and superior for tinkering with and customizing. But the general public finds that difficult and the iPad 'good enough'. The vendors follow the money. Consider the potential market for the iPad bezel vs. anything else. A million sold and counting means a growth market for custom bezels.

The alternative is custom bezels for a fragmented and smaller market. Which would you pick?

The ipad is not going to be replacing in-dash systems any more than the ipod replaced the portable mp3 player. A bunch of people will buy it and use it, just like a bunch of people will still buy and use the in-dash systems. Apple products simply have more marketing associated with them, and as bugbyte said, there is more money to be made off of accessories for that than for custom solutions.

I think the general complaint here is that this is a product that could have been made many years ago for, say, a commonly sold 7" screen (like the EBY701, for instance), for a few popular car bezels.

Exactly. There's only so many screens that seem to exist for this hobby, and this site certainly existed long before the iPad was ever on anyone's mind. I guess it is just frustrating that people seem to think of the iPad like it is some amazing crossover device, and not just a niche product.

                            It's simple.
The iPad is a hot item. The brass at mp3car are trying to get a piece of the iPad pie.
I guess that would be iPie?
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
