  • Revisiting the "bump" rule for Classified Section.

First off I like the no bump rule. It keeps the forums less cluttered and makes people post more clearly and at decent prices.

Sadly it is vague and unclear as to what I "bump" is. Obviously, posts like "offers?", "bump", "ttt", "still available" are bumps. But is "price reduced", "X got PM", "item(s) added/sold" or adding pictures.

What about bumps from non-op like "good/bad seller/buyer".

I think the mods/admins need to define what a "bump" is.

Example: I feel this user was given an unfair warning, as he lowered his asking price.

    http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...994#post892994

Now if a seller lowers his original asking price, then a user who may not have been interested before might now be interested. If they are forced to edit the original post, then no one will notice the new price.

Also I know with some forums, admins can force users to view the rules, before the thread is made. If we enabled such a feature, people would automatically know the rules for the classified section.

Edit: Also when an admin or mod warns an user they automatically "bump" the thread again. Would not a better idea be to PM the user and delete the bump?

    Thoughts?

Yep. No reason for the warning.

I still think that it's a good idea for the seller to change the original posting price to avoid having to scroll down and look for "updates".

I agree that the rule is too vague. I think there should be a "limited-bump" rule..

      e.g.:

      NO:
      - "Bump" "ttt" every five minutes

      OK:
      - Posting pertinent info such as a price reduction
      - Non-OP "good seller" posts as Ody mentioned
      - Bump your thread if it doesn't receive any attention after X amount of time (at least a day)

I think if something changes, ie price, something removed, something added etc, then change the original post but also be allowed to put in a new post saying what has changed.

I think if he had not used the word bump, it would have been fine.

The rules are a little vague presently, and I think the 3rd post by tj is more appropriate. Although 1 day I think is too little for a bump, maybe 2 or 3 days.

Usually if a thread is not getting noticed then a problem exist, lacking title, lacking pictures, price too high, or it is a new user to the forum.

If we did allow bumping, it should only be once after 7 days.

Edit from above: Also when an admin or mod warns an user they automatically "bump" the thread again. Would not a better idea be to PM the user and delete the bump?

Or just edit the offending post with the warning.

I do agree that I may should not have used the word "bump", but it was only for the purpose of dropping the price.

When I did so I already had nearly 75 views with no messages or replies. That tells me either the price is too high Or my description sucks. I took a stab and lowered the price and then got two people intrested.

The way I have been enforcing it is as follows:
-NO BUMPING YOUR THREAD JUST TO KNOCK YOUR THREAD TO THE TOP!

-You can make another post to lower the price. 1% drops don't count!
-You can make another post to give additional information.

-No, you can not post after X number of days. If no one has made an offer than you need to lower your price. No exceptions!

This is pretty much what I told Darque when he first came on so I think he follows the same. Red is still kind of newb and may have made a mistake Mods do make mistakes... Except me. hehe, j/k

I don't even post warnings anymore. I simply delete the thread. I'm sick and tired of people not following the rules. There are only like 5 stickies in that forum stating that you should read the rules.
No one in that forum gets mercy from me anymore. I really am a pretty nice guy in every other section of mp3car, but not that one.

Thanks for pointing out the vagueness Ody I'll update it.

No problem. I was not saying she did anything wrong, just pointing out the vagueness.

the problem is no-one searches the for sale section. There may be a buyer out there for an item but they miss it as they dont log in for a few days and then it gets pushed down the list. The seller may be asking a fair price but there item is just missed by the right person. I think there should be an exception of about 2 weeks for some items to allow them a couple of 'bumps' over a month (ie 2 bumps) but the after that no more.

Failing that people will just get round it by making another thread so what would you prefer? more duplicate for sale threads or aloowing a couple of bumps over a month?
