  • Ubuntu 10, is it right for what I want to do?

I dont know if this is technically off topic, but I was wondering if Ubuntu is right for this application. I have a guest PC at my job that Hotel guests use to access internet and what not. Originally I had set up EWF with Windows XP. Some how its being corrupted and after a few days the PC doesnt work.

My idea was to use something other then XP. Ubuntu looks like it will do the trick. Is there a way though that I can set it up to not write to the HDD. So basically if they screw something up, a simple restart makes it good again?

Basically all I want to install is web browsers, a network printer, instant messengers, and adobe reader and MS office, or something that can open MS Office files. Is this possible? Also what do I do about driver?

    Thanx in advance!

You can make ubuntu read only, but what about other XP options like deep freeze? I ran into the same dilemma at a hotel here... we tried ubuntu but idiot users couldn't figure out how to make anything work.

The big blue 'e' wasn't there so they couldn't figure out how to get on the internet, even with changing the big firefox shortcut on the desktop to read "click here for internet".

HAHAHAHAHAHA, thats too funny. Thats like me, when I see something new, I just automatically program myself that I cant figure it out. All it takes is a deep breath and relaxation. Thats how I figured out mac, which looks similar to Ubuntu.

I have never heard of Deep Freeze.... I Binged it, and it says it prevents malacious downloads. What I want is the user not to be able to change anything. They cant change the desktop, they cant save anything onto the PC, they cant install. I just want them to be able to chat, web browse and use MS office.

You betcha. Let me know how it ends up working out... that software irritates the heck out of me from an admin standpoint, but it works great.

            EDIT: Moved to OT.

                BTW:

If you can get over *not to bright users* -- a live cd is a real easy solution to this problem...

Well, yes and no. After a fresh reboot it'll be extremely slow until all the programs that are used have been cached or however the live does it. We tried this as well before I decided to just lock down an ubuntu install. Complaint after complaint... people love to complain. Short of building a custom LiveCD, flash would have to be reinstalled every reboot, adobe reader if they don't want to use the built-in reader. That could get annoying.

making a ubuntu remix isn't too tough. Some project has a web interface for doing it.

Just wanted to let you guys know i did go ahead and buy DeepFreeze. The software is so simple, yet so powerful! I literally installed it, deleted as much as I could, restarted and it was all back again. There is literally no evidence the software is on the PC except a very tiny bear head icon. I am most definately also going to be using this on my Car PC units. That way people that think they can change my settings will do so, then I simply restart to get it all back the same. This was one of the only reasons I want to use EWF, to protect the OS from dumb @$$es.
